I think we are going to try to do it with melted to fit lexan. Should work well for our purpose. |

Looooooooooooonnnnnnnnnngggggggg, first day. Good news is I have an outstanding crew to work with and was shocked to see how many of my returning students have signed up for multiple hours during the day for their electives.  Kids were excited about the theme, and commented on how many options they had to work on. Many latched on to different parts of the project already. I'm hoping I can get a few supplies tomorrow morning at 7 so I can get a few groups on their way. Most classes meet with underclassman for the first time tomorrow, so not much will happen there, but my upper level classes are itching to get started. I've got a lead student who thinks hes got a handle on our rocket fuselage pipe. We might even have it there tomorrow. |

Update 8/27/19
Before I begin, we had a rough start to our morning today at PHS. A popular student, with many friends in my classes, was in a very bad accident on the way to school today. He was ejected from the vehicle and was life flighted to Billings. He is in a medically induced coma. We don't know much else. We are a fairly small school at around 640 students, where most kids know everyone else. It was a rough day for many of my students.  Today's update. Our first look at where the post will go. 
Once marked we headed in to make the ceremonial first cut. 
Day 1 
Tomorrow students will begin work in the mounting brackets to attach this to the support beam. 
This showed up from @Frank_B I'll give more details tomorrow.

Was just reading through the September issue of Sky & Telescope and found an article about Chesley Bonestell, an artist who drew illustrations for numerous fantasy and science fictions magazines during the '40s, '50s, and '60s. He also collaborated with key people in NASA's early space program, and with movie/TV industry producers. He was also an architect and worked on various well known projects, including the Golden Gate Bridge and Art Deco style of the Chrysler Building (yeah, those eagles are his work).
Several of his paintings feature the colonization of Mars. Since his artistic style dealt with the unknowns of the future, it could be used as a guideline for your Mars project. Here's some of his work:

Update 8/28 Good day, it's invigorating when the kids get excited and really get sucked into the planning and design process. Students broke up into three groups for the three different corners to brainstorm what they would like to see. We talked as a group about the basic plan, then turned them loose to find references, list, and draw out their ideas.  We discussed things like methane wells being a possible feature. Students want to include a pivot irrigation system in the Powell, WY portion of our display. 
Then there was the rocket display. 
Base of our 18" diameter rocket flame.

One of my students(dang I've got good students)talked to his boss at Waterworks, and was given this 15 foot piece of 12" pipe. It's perfect!
At this point we had to have some serious discussions about how to proceed. We don't want to end up with so ,uh rocket "hidden in the ceiling." We traced the tube, that needs to be corrected a bit, and used the 12" disk to determine exactly how much would need to be removed to fit in the corner. 
Trying to keep the overall footprint at 18", this is what the pipe will have to look like when cut to fit in the corner. 
We think this will be acceptable. It will still retain the 12" cross section.

If Robotics worked @ it, the rotating irrigation system could sneak up on unsuspecting stationary freshmen and douse them as a welcome to Powell High.

Update 8/29
Running wide open today.
We got some color on one of the walls. We will fade it up eventually. 
Student groups discussed what shape they needed for their corners, and how the shelves should look. They drew out the shapes on their plywood, getting two shapes each. One will be the upper tier, and the other main tier. 
Safety lessons, and then they began cutting out their tiers. 
Later in the day, other groups started adding the 3D structures for hanging. 
 We managed to get out base rings attached to the post and layout what the lexan should look like. They used paper to map out the shape needed to cover the cone of 18" base and 12" top. 
Once satisfied that we had the right shape, I told them not to ruin $225.00 worth of material.
Just a bit of pressure to really concentrate on what they were doing.
We are ready to melt and bend the lexan tomorrow. These are our brackets to hold the post the the support beam. We hope to have them done tomorrow.

Don't be so afraid of cleaning the HVLP gun, it's super easy and quick work to do a lot of what you're planning. It's not as messy or uncontrollable as you think. You can run it anywhere from airbrush misting to a 12" flat fan hose, they're incredibly useful.

This is our new Principal , helping us out by holding up one of the tiers so students and myself could evaluate how big it needed to be. Students are not allowed on ladders till they go through training. Students are going through ladder safety training today.
