It’s talking about the hub. Hooked mean just that, the spokes have a j shape at the end and hook in to the center. They’re stronger, but weigh more. Strait laced have a flatish flange on the top and and are stopped by the diameter of the hole they go through on the hub. Lighter, but can’t handle as heavy of hits. Of course, that’s in general. |

hooked rims vs straight rims is a ongoing issue in the road world. For MTB and gravel straight rims should be fine since you don't go much higher than 30-40 PSI. The only way to know is look up the specs of the wheel/rim or pull off the tire and look. For me hooked only but I am a roadie.....I have see too many hookless failures on the road already. |
