So as we end our summer on our new home and acreage we have come up with a few problems. Ones I for saw but was told by my wife I was overreacting. I was wanting to get my wife a wheel gun in 357 mags because of the snake and hogs we have in the area. The first thing was one of our dogs was bitten by a 5 to 6-foot diamondback rattlesnake she made it out okay but might have a battle scar to prove it! Now that it's getting cold she works nights so on her days off she takes the dogs out late at night and she hears the hogs grunting! What I'm looking for ideas on a 357 mag wheel gun that can have reflex sight mounted on them. She is a new shooter and I'm going to train her using 38spl until she can use 357 mag ammo. I'm looking for ideas for the wheel gun! I live in a rural area no place around that allows you to shot a weapon for more than 100 miles! Even if they do most done have wheel guns. So looking for advice on barrel length I'm looking for more of a 4 inch but that's due to my snub nose 38 spl experience. Also, she wants DA/SA. Like to hear what you would carry for hogs and snakes! What barrel length would you want? What caliber? I'd love to take her to some range that we can let her fire everything she wants but it's not going to happen! So my next idea is to get info from ladies about what they like! |

If you want a .357 Magnum, then go for it, but I'm gonna tell you right now: 9mm can quickly kill a black bear, so feral hogs and snakes aren't any problem for something like a 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, etc. If you think anything smaller than a .357 can't kill a black bear, think again: https://www.upi.com/Top_News/2008/09/23/Bear-shot-after-biting-deputy/72581222146393/ (I used to live in Morrow County.) https://abcnews.go.com/US/zanesville-deputy-killed-charging-bear-shot-feet/story?id=14775964 Those were both with .40 S&W, and 9mm isn't far behind. | If you're actually going to shoot it frequently, get Ruger GP100 4"bbl, heavy but comfortable for range with full 158gr loads, the optimum 357mag load. If you're going to stick it in a drawer like everyone else does, Older Colt Python or S&W 19 pre lock, 4"bbl is the only practical 357mag length. You're welcome and enjoy👍🏻 |
