This Golf Digest article reports that the Saudi Public Investment Fund might stop funding LIV due to various economic influences, including the ongoing ME conflicts.

Golf Digest has a 2 article limit for non-subscribers so I think y'all can read it in any case.

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/liv-golf-future-saudi-arabia-2026

Edit: Here's the leading paragraph from the article:

Amid growing speculation that the league may be discontinued at the end of 2026, the Financial Times reported that PIF is weighing the prospect of no longer funding LIV, with an announcement coming as soon as Thursday. Though the sovereign wealth fund's estimated worth hovers near $940 billion, the Iran War and Middle Eastern conflict has taken a toll on the fund, according to reports. Saudi Arabia was already retreating from promised investments before the war, strained by budget shortfalls and unrealistic designs. The U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran accelerated the reckoning. Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz has cut Saudi oil exports nearly in half. The kingdom has shut down most of its offshore fields and this month halted one of the world's largest petrochemical plants.

For a people who are free, and who mean to remain so, a well-organized and armed militia is their best security.

I’ve never even seent it in my tv listings.

No interest anyway.

Golf is an individual sport.

Team golf is dumb.

LIV is not tv oriented.  You are not the target audience.  Younger people don't consume media like you do.

Team golf is fun.  I guess you have never played in a scramble?

I’ve played more scrambles than I would like.

If you like em, fine.

If I’m spending time and money to play golf, I’d like to play my own game.

If I’m with the same three people, I can have the same fun.

This... did not age well.

I am going to miss watching the events on those unique courses and the excitement the fans brought around the globe.

Back to stodgy old boring vanilla golf.

Never understood the hate for LIV.  Increased players prize money on the Tour, allowed many more golfers to become pro's, took money from the Saudi's and increased exposure to golf.  Never watched it for more than 10 minutes, but (while I love golf), don't watch much PGA either.

The hate from my perspective is they poached some of the best players off tour because they had ridiculous money to throw around with zero care about running a successful business.

I actually think the Saudis endgame was to force the PGA tour into a partnership and end up with board seats. Hard to accomplish that when the vast majority of golf fans didn’t bother watching Rahm and Bryson winning hit n giggles on resort courses.

fining these guys 5 million to get back on the pga tour is ridiculous

The Majority seamed to be Americans, and then  these foreigners on American soil criticize American golfers on the LIV tour is even more  hypocritical

They couldn't ever get any of their events on nbc, cbs or the golf channel.  I would suspect that there was some conversation between the pga tour and the TV networks with the pga tour telling them if they ever broadcast LIV events, they may not get their PGA contract renewed.  People would have watched if it was on CBS on Sunday afternoon.

I don't blame some of the older players for taking the money and going to LIV.  I think Ian Poulter got somewhere around 25 million to join.  He wasn't going to earn 25 million for the rest of his life on the PGA tour, and he only had to play in 14 events per year.  So for him, he has played five seasons on LIV.  He was guaranteed 5 million per season.  He would have had to been 27th on the PGA tour money list to earn that this year, and probably play at least 20 events to do that.  No way he had that much skill left in his body.  Father time catches up with all of us.

I was speaking to some caddies at the last Firestone senior tour event.  They made one thing very clear, the players and the caddies are there for money.  If there was no money in professional golf, they wouldn't do all the travel and time away from their families.  People who say they are playing for the "love of the game" are players who have already made their $200 million.

I never cared about LIV golf anyway.  All those guys who chose to play for a bunch of rag-heads, goes against my own principles.  They should be ashamed of themselves.

There... I said it.

Women’s tour wouldn’t exist without Aramco or the Men’s DP world tour which is the race for Dubai.

Attached File

El Tigre got $50+ million at least from the ME specifically Dubai.

I’m not sure there is a male or female golfer that is a pro that hasn’t in some way received funds from that part of the world.  I’m not discounting your point.  More specifically a lot of people spoke out against LIV that had taken money from that part of the world.

It also, and it doesn’t get said much, but it made the PGA tour revamp its model and the players benefited greatly.

Competition does that.

This x1000, can't be said enough.  When it was LIV it was blood money.  The other tours... just another routine stop on the schedule.

The hypocrisy of the haters is off the charts.

I like LIV and watched most some of most of the tournaments since the beginning.  The Adelaide stop was obviously huge.  I think overall their players and announcers have more personality than most of the PGAT guys, who are a bunch of stiffs (except Rory, who's a huge douche but he does have personality).  I hope they can reconfigure into something with maybe 10 tournaments and get rid of the issues that caused the OWGR screwing.  If they keep the prize money high and it doesn't hurt majors status good players will want to play.

That said I was not a fan of the music you could constantly hear.

The best thing about it was they showed constant shots and not some Buick or insurance commercial every 2 seconds.  You got to see a lot of golf from all the players and not just the well known favorites.

The team aspect could have some potential, but it never really came into play on the course enough to be interesting.  I only remember one tournament where the team thing really mattered and they had a playoff, and it was entertaining in that one instance.

The PGAT players really should be down on their knees thanking LIV (and Phil and Greg Norman) because it singlehandedly forced the PGAT to jack up its prize money.

My favorite is the player who used to be sponsored by Jumeriah hotels for the first five years of his professional career.  Then he bashed LIV for the whole blood money thing.

And... didn't the Dubai tournament basically pay huge appearance fees to players each year to get them to show up before it was the "race to dubai" thing?
