Just purchased P2S with the AMS 2. Should be delivered on Tuesday. Looks like its time to do some reading in here.

Welcome, that is a great setup to learn with. I started with the same and then added an H2C to the mix within a couple of months. I'm sure you saw it, but there is a thread dedicated to Bambu products https://www.ar15.com/forums/General/Bambu-Lab-general-thread-X1-X2-P1-A1-H2-series/194-2555663/?page=1  there is also a general new to 3D printing thread that has good all around info https://www.ar15.com/forums/General/The-thread-for-new-to-3D-printing-to-ask-questions/194-2835432/  .

Welcome to the party, pal!

Congrats!  Tons to learn, but the barrier to entry has never been lower.  I started 4 months ago with a Bambu A1, and I will very, very likely be upgrading to an X2D before the year is out. I got my sister into it, and she bought a P1S the week after I bought my A1 (younger sister is always copying me...she's been doing that for 31 years...).

It's like you're stealing things from the shop without leaving your chair. It's awesome.

Need a chip clip? F*ck Amazon for $9, print one. Or 4.  It costs you $1 in filament. Speaking of which, Sunlu PLA+ 2.0 is a great filament, and less $ than the Bambu stuff.

Need a sunglasses holder for you car's cup holder? Print one for $1.50. That is what I am printing this very moment.

Reloading funnels or ammo storage? Yep, there's a file for that...lots of them.
Need to organize your tool chest? Yes, there's files for that (look up "gridfinity").
Need a mini AR15 lower keychain? Yep, there's a file for that.

Oh, do you need a new suppressor?  YEP, THERE'S A FILE FOR THAT, TOO. (after you file the appropriate paperwork, of course). Look up "FTN suppresor pack". $0 tax stamps, FTW.

Makerworld, Printables, GunCADInded...100% of things I think of to print, there's been a 3D print file available for free. Search. Click. Print.

1st thing once you unbox your printer, besides printing a Benchy....print all the P2S upgrades on Makerworld, and download the Bambu app to your phone. Start saving favorites for future printing. Handles for the included Allen wrenches, plate scraper, etc. The Bambu ecosystem is so easy, and the forum here is great if you have questions.

The bane of your 3D printing existence is going to be filament storage. The spools take up a good amount of space.

OK...that's enough rambling for now...I'm 4 fingers deep in a rocks glass of Four Roses, and it's getting difficult to type without many spelling mistakes.

Get these screwdrivers.  You'll thank me after using the little L-shaped wrenches you get with the printer and have to tear into your toolhead.  And welcome to the insanity of 3D2A.  Lots of experience here to take advantage of.

Got it all set up.

And the first print with Sunluu PLA+ at 48% relative humidity.

I'm going to let it go through a drying cycle over night and reprint benchy to compare the two prints.

PLA doesn't absorb much. You won't notice much difference. Biggest difference is wet PLA gets brittle and snaps inside the AMS bowdens.

PETG or Nylon on the other hand.

Got a few things printed today. Poop chute, scraper handle, dust covers and now have desicant bins printing.

Next will be some tool holders for flushcuts and a 14 in 1 Milwaukee mini bit driver and a riser for the glass top.

Then I just have to wait for my order of filament to arrive from Bambu.

You chose well.  I started with an X1C and the P2S is by far a better value these days.  I have graduated to an H2D, still have the X1C but it isn't really used much, really want an H2C.  Just can't justify it since I don't know shit about designing stuff in CAD and mainly print stuff from Makerworld.

It's laughably easy to learn CAD if you have even modest mechanical inclination and aptitude. It's a very logical process, especially parametric modeling. Organic not so much. No idea how to make a frog in Blender, but SW, F360, OS, it's not bad. I took a class in college in 2006 and it's like riding a bike. Learn one, and the rest come pretty easy. Do the Fusion series on YT from Lars and you'll be off to the races in no time.

My printer is out for delivery today, should see it soon. Hoping the other 2 boxes (filament) show up quickly.

I ordered some desiccant beads and a cheap hygrometer, since I already have a nice airtight bin that should hold at least 4 spools. I live in the Arizona desert where the temps regularly hit 118-120 in the summer and the humidity is considered "high" when it gets over 20%. I'm going to try that for keeping stuff dry before going any further down the rabbit hole!

Being retired and 'stir-crazy' when it's too hot to work on outdoor projects, I'm looking forward to this new endeavor. It'll keep me from just sitting on my ass...

Make sure you dry your filament. Chances are, it's being delivered wet, regardless of what the desiccant pack and vacuum seal lead you to believe.

Question regarding filament.

Is there a list or recommendation of top 5 brands? Or what to avoid?  Primarily PLA and PETG is my immediate concern.

There are a few exceptional brands that just print really, really well.

Atomic, Prusa, Bambu, Polymaker, 3DXTech, Fiberon, Fillamentum, to name a few.

The there are some that print pretty darn well, especially for the money.

Sunlu, Numakers, CC3D, Overture, 3DFuel, Jesse, Hatchbox, etc.

There are only a few I'd avoid at all costs. IIIDMax is one of them.

Get anything from the first two lists and you'll be fine. Calibrating it is more important to final quality than brand in most cases.

Another quick question re drying:

As I explained before, I live in an extremely dry climate. After drying filament in the AMS, I intend to store it in a sealed dry box with desiccant.

Is it necessary to re-dry filament taken out of dry storage before using again? Should it be done as a precaution?

Newbie questions, I know...but I'm learning!
6/25/2026 12:06:31 PM EDT
[#20]
No need to re-dry assuming it is in a sealed desiccant storage box before and during printing. So AMS, make sure you have desiccant pods.

Do dry it initially though.

Great. That's what was confusing me! Now, I just need to figure out how to make the printer work. I started the calibration routine, it did a bunch of moving around, etc., then stopped with the bar graph on the screen at about 1/3. It's been sitting like that for 2 hours.

I have to leave for a couple hours, I'll check it later.

Update: After another attempt (cut power, restart, factory reset, start calibration routine) it made it through. Now...how to get it to talk to my computer? I don't do "apps", I don't do "QR codes". My phone is for making and receiving calls.

I installed Bambu Studio on the desktop machine. It can't find the printer because it's not configured for my LAN. This shit is getting very frustrating.

Updating again: I guess the only way to get anything done with this demon machine is to use their goddam "app". I had to install that, connect via bluetooth, find the LAN, connect to that, update firmware, blah, blah, blah... Maybe now I can get it to work (tomorrow...I'm hungry).

Learned how to add a vector file to a print. Daughter in law asked if I could add their business logo to promo items that she would pay me to print up.

Came out pretty good for a first go. Does need some tweaking.

Had my first failure. PETG HF went all spaghetti on me. Dried it for 12 hours at 45 degrees. AMS 2 read 18% humidity. Filament still too moist?

Few issues. 45 is too cold to dry it properly.

18% is too high. Your hygrometer should be bottomed out, aka 10%.

Thats a terrible print design. Very high retract count mixed with a high ooze filament is going to fail sometimes. Nature of the beast outside of heavily tuning the filament, which is possible, but time consuming.

I pulled my PLA out of the AMS and am currently drying the PETG at 65 degrees.  Tonight I will download your desicant boxes and print all of them after a trial print of your rear box.

18% is plenty dry.
Was there supposed to be a support under that overhang?

The issue with 18% is you're not measuring the humidity of the filament. You're measuring the humidity of the air the filament is sitting in.

If the air is reading 18% despite having desiccant in the AMS, your filament is way, way higher than 18%. Most hygrometers go down to about 10%. If they are not bottomed out, your desiccant isn't effective (which leads to wet filament), your filament is already wet, or both.

What was your bed temp? And what is your bed cleaning routine? And when was it last cleaned in this manner?

PETG sticks exceptionally well. Generally you don't have failures of PETG popping off the build plate mid print.

Bed temp was 65.
Bed cleaned with dawn and hot water with a new microfiber cloth. The rinsed and dried with a second cloth. Did the cleaning yesterday morning. One PLA print done after cleaning.

Okay, 65 is way too cold for PETG on textured PEI. 80 is a better place to start for PETG bed temps.

Some argue against using a cloth to dry as even lint free cloths aren't truly lint free. Youay be fine, you may not be. But increasing your bed temps are definitely warranted.

I prefer to wash and then blow dry the sheets. Even with new microfiber, there can be lint or more importantly other chemical contaminates.

Do not air /drip dry as the minerals from the water will stay on the plate.

Noob mistake. Selected the wrong model of a riser for my P2S. 6 hours of printing one for an X1 series. Had to throw away the front panel and the two rear corners and reprint them for the right model.

Lesson learned. Pay attention when selecting the file to print. Make sure you have the right one.
