Is it supposed to be demilled in a certain way? Most of what I see doesn't have any holes drilled or anything. Seems to just have the explosives removed? Any issues/ stories involving the ATF to be aware of?

Having the explosives removed is typically all that was done when things like that were brought back home.  Sometimes even that did not happen.
