An undersea fibre optic cable between Latvia and Sweden was damaged on Sunday, probably as a result of external influence, Riga has said, adding that its navy had dispatched a patrol boat to inspect a vessel suspected of involvement. Two other vessels in the area were also subject to investigation, Latvia’s navy said. “We have determined that there is most likely external damage and that it is significant,” the Latvian prime minister, Evika Silina, told reporters after an extraordinary government meeting. What a strange coincidence.... A ship suspected of carrying out the sabotage of the undersea cable damage between Sweden and Latvia has been seized following a decision by Swedish prosecutors. Data from ship tracking website Vesselfinder shows how the Maltese-flagged cargo ship Vezhen, which is being tracked by the Swedish Coast Guard towards Swedish waters, left the Russian port of Ust-Luga on Friday. It has not yet been confirmed that Vezhen is included in the investigation. “We can confirm our position, but not what we are doing there,” says Coast Guard press communicator Mattias Lindholm.
