That's not a failure on the blade, it is an intentional cut to minimize vibration. You'll find a series of them around the blade. Southern Grind, the semi-custom knife company that singer Zac Brown started, used worn saw mill blades almost exclusively for their material. They cut shapes out of the big circular blades on a water jet machine, the skeletons they made looked pretty cool as well. |

Unless you're just screwing around or have a sentimental attachment to the saw blades, or at the very least have a good ideal of what alloy they are it's going to be better to buy some 1084 or 80CrV2. You can absolutely make knives or knife shaped objects out of the saw blades and you'll probably be able to get them hard enough to be passable but the heat treat is going to be a guess at best. I mess around with salvaged materials sometimes but it can be a crapshoot. I forged a cool knife out of a ferriers rasp then found out after normalizing, annealing and "austenitizing" it like it was 1095 that it was only in the middle 40s on the Rockwell C scale. I think I made a few posts about it in my knifemaking thread in this subforum. The steel is such a small cost of what goes into making a knife that I'd rather spend a few bucks on a piece of known steel than to spend a bunch of time on something that may not end up working out well. After the rasp failure, I decided that I was going to stick to leaf springs that I found at my place for forged salvaged material knives. You can case harden a rasp and be ok but a spring has to be a spring the whole way through. |
