I'm re-doing a room in the house and this happened to one of the doors. Attached File Attached File Three layers of paint pealed off easier than a wal mart price sticker. I sanded the old paint with 180 grit prior to applying the new paint. It's Farrell Calhoun that I bought from the paint store a week ago, so it's not old paint. The first layer was a light layer and the second and third were what I would consider normal layers of paint. Should I have sanded with a courser sandpaper, maybe 80 grit prior to painting? Should I have used some sort of primer? Did I put the layers on too thick? |

I would get all that fresh, peeling paint off the door. Then get some of this and scrub the door with Green Scotch-Brite pads soaked in it. Dry well with paper towels. Attached File Then get some of this primer. It works great. Attached File I recently painted 14 interior doors annd three exterior doors and that was my process. Then a coat of what ever paint you want. |
| I don’t know that brand. Personally, I’d suspect a paint failure. If it was clean and free of silicone and wax, it should never do that. The heavy brush marks make me think the paint has a high solids content. |

Originally Posted By User55645: Do you know what type of paint was on previous? You can't put latex over oil without proper prep. After sanding how did you wipe down the surface? Orbital sander hooked up to shop vac so not too much residue. Wiped it down with a damp cloth. |

Sand with rougher grit and use primer as first coat. My wife is a paint snob. She does all the interior painting. She won't use anything but Sherwin. |

| Okay, went into the paint place and they confirmed that the old paint was oil based (they actually still sell it and can could mix me a match, LOL). But, I ended up sanding the door down with 40 grit, really roughed up the surface and got an oil to latex primer. I just applied the first coat. Going to see how that does. |

Exactly what I suspected, sorry im late to the thread. As soon as you said it was 20 years old, I knew you were trying to put latex over oil. Shittiest part is, the EPA took everything out of latex that made it work and it’s rare to find good oil base anymore so yeah you’re looking at a total sand job. Was in the commercial paint side for about 15 years and all I learned is that I hate masking, prep, and the EPA. |
