Does anyone know anything about depression support groups?
I’ve opened this thread to post a few times and today was a bad day. I don’t want to be here anymore. I’m not cashing out, I just don’t want to be here. Counseling in the past hasn’t done shit, I’m not really drinking hardly at all, I’m doing well professionally... I’m seasonally depressed, life depressed, dead and empty and don’t really have a reason to stay. Again, I’m not ending it. I’m not posting to say I’m doing anything stupid. I just need some insight for support groups, anything. I’m not sure where to start but I can’t keep doing this. I’m too big of a pussy to do anything. Grand Rapids, mi. |

What do you do professionally?
As far as the seasonal depression goes, have you considered flying somewhere warm and sunny for a day or two? A round trip to Vegas and back is like $200. I'm not saying it would be a long-term fix, but it might be a little bit of relief from some of your issues. I've had that "dead and empty" feeling for years now. I've been trying to make some big changes in my life, in order to keep my distance from the situations that bring out the worst of those thoughts and feelings. I don't know if it will work out in the long term, but I do know that things are better in the short term. In my case, those changes involved leaving a good paying job with high seniority to go back to tech school to learn a different trade. |

I scheduled a vacation to Mexico 2 weeks ago. All inclusive. Real nice place. Apparently there was a miscommunication in single occupancy versus singles resort because I was in a honeymoon suite surrounded with married couples on their honeymoon, anniversaries, and beach weddings. Fucking gay. I haven’t talked to my mom or sister in 8 years. Dad died when I was a kid. No family left. Friends are ok but don’t know how to support emotionally versus offering a beer. I just don’t have a reason to be here. Winter sucks. I’m lonely and my safety net is nonexistent. Originally Posted By wtfboombrb:

Was hit with viral encephalitis on 11/8/18 30'mins before the end of my shift. Manager called 911 after I had a seizure, saved my life ( kind of wish I would have gone).
I feel weak most of the time have a headache 24/7 and sever light sensitivity. Spend most of my time laying in the dark anymore. Feel bad for my dog. He's such a good boy always checking on me. He's still young though and wants to play, can't even take him on 2 block walk without feeling run down. Attempted too go back to work yesterday, made it an hour before I had to go. Manager wanted me to call someone to come pick me up. The woman I was seeing "thought she was the 1" decided she wanted to be with someone else around the same time. I have thought about eating an HST. |

Today would have been my grandpa's 90th birthday if the hospital wouldn't have killed him. They fucked up and gave him 4x the amount of blood thinners he was supposed to have and he had a massive brain hemorrhage. He was in for a minor stroke, things were actually looking up for him for a change after my grandmother passed. He got his pilot licence back, was getting remarried, seemed normal again, but people can't pay attention to what the fuck they're doing. My mom and aunts go a couple million a piece because its easier to put a dollar amount on someone's life than to admit that you fucked up.
The day before they OD'd him, me and mom went to go see him and I had just gotten a new computer game and I couldn't wait to go back home and play it. I never got to talk to my grandpa again because I wanted to play some stupid game. I've made more than my fair share of stupid decisions in my life, but it's that and one other one that keep me up at night. |

My line is always open to all of you at any time IM me and I will call you to lend you an ear and a shoulder. Together, we can overcome a lot of difficulties and hard times. We have done it before and we can continue to do it. Do not despair and lose hope. We have had attempts in the past.Thank God, both were dealt with successfully through the phone. One of them involved tc6969 on location. He (tc6969) helped with one case a few years back, so we have a reasonable model for action. If in FL, I am sure tc would get involved again to avert a tragedy like he did before If any of you have any suspicion that a fellow member is contemplating suicide, is in serious depression, etc and you feel you need help, contact any Staff member and ask them to pass the information on to me...........or send me an IM I will then try to contact on the phone someone from the HTF (mod or someone who knows the member in question) and we will initiate whatever is needed to help the member. All this will be done in confidence and only those involved (usually 2-3 people counting myself) will ever know who or what happened. If anyone is a professional at suicide prevention, we can use you. I am not one, so if you can help send me an IM and I will add you to a phone tree A couple of the things that have worked for me : - Ask the person NOT TO DRINK ALCOHOL. Booze is a stimulant in small dosages but it will depress you even more than you were if you do more than a couple of shots -Let the member tell you what the problems are -letting them get things off their chest is a good start. Often, they have few people they want to talk to or will listen to them- so hear them out. THEN, you can try to make them see how much worse off his family will be WITHOUT HIM/HER Most of us don't give 2 shits about ourselves, but our families are precious! If they see how their death would add to the already huge burden sometimes is enough to let them think about it some more and not go through it. There are other things we can do, especially if the member has friends in the site, but I don't want to discuss it here. When the time comes, please get involved and help a fellow member in need Thanks again for your good words and works. |

| Not enough (in response to gingerbread man^^). Does it sound terrible that paying outrageous sums of money I'd a factor? Even with insurance it's nuts with a deductible...no excuse I know I know. Me and my wife are at each other's throats. I am going to admit that I have been drinking more lately and I know that doesn't help. People say "well just quit drinking" easy to say from the outside. Maybe it's becoming a problem....ok, it is....but I've been drinking to escape shit. I know that is not the way. I get it. I'm sure I'll get the same response. But I guess I need to find the underlying cause of WHY. I don't feel like it is the number 1 cause but I know it has become an issue. Maybe I'm rambling or maybe I'm just talking to myself on a keyboard to people who don't know me....that's hard for me....to talk. I keep things bottled up inside where they belong. I'm sure I'll just hear "quit, problem solved" that's not I'm here for. I don't know what I'm here for, but it's a step I guess. A bigger step than I usually take |

Wtfboombrb and gingerbread man. Thank you. I'm not sure y'all know how hard it is to just say this to someone you know and then get defensive when they tell it. Saying it here without preconceived ideas is much easier than to to people who are ready to judge you as soon as you open your mouth. |
| But I'm still dealing with anxiety, stress and a bit of depression that was spawned before the drinking....I truly understand drinking is only making it worse but that all led to drinking....does that make sense? Even if I quit drinking, I don't think the long term depression is gonna go away... |

I've made some significant changes in my life that certainly seem to have helped, although it still scares me how fast I can spiral downwards again. Still doing better than I was, and that is what matters as far as I'm concerned. If you are seeing a mental health professional, you aren't doing yourself any favors by keeping things to yourself when you see them. That is like paying for a gym membership just to wander around inside. |

I have thought about eating an HST. On the physical side, there is little one can do to expedite or force getting back to “normal”. Once we accept that, things become easier. For me, it was a simple realization; in the form of some wisdom once spoken by my late grandfather. To paraphrase, “Barring a miracle of divine intervention, you cannot force time’s hand.” There is only so much you can do in the moment. It may only be a fraction of the progress you’d like to see. Yet, it’s progress all the same. You can lament the things you wish could do. Or you can focus on the things you CAN do. No matter how small a victory. Standby...fat fingered the submit button. More to come...
My situation was similar. It was a different ailment, but it left me absolutely drained. I know what it’s like to want to just sit on the couch. To feel like it’s all I was really capable of. Eventually I realized that if I ever wanted to get to point B, I had to put in effort at point A. As stated, we can’t rush time. Unfortunately, we can prolong time. If getting back to “normal” requires reaching certain milestones, take aim at the first and get there. The longer you wait, the longer the full process will take. My first step was getting off the couch. It wasnt easy. It took deliberate effort. And it was SLOW. Initially, it was pushing myself to get up once an hour and do a couple trips up and down the stairs. It’s something that wouldn’t even register with most as noteworthy or difficult. But it was. From there, it moved walking around the yard. Then going to the grocery store or running light errands. There were setbacks. Times I pushed things a little too much. In those moments, it’s easy to revert to dwelling on what you cannot do. Don’t. Instead, remind yourself of your previous accomplishments. Consider the things that once seemed daunting; which now are trivially easy. Then, recalculate your next milestone, and push for it. It’ll be natural to yearn for that end goal. That’s fine. But, again, don’t get caught up in how you’re not there yet. Keep taking it a step at a time. Eventually, you’ll reach a point where you’re closer to the end goal than you are from the beginning! At the same time, progress takes less and less fortitude. There will still be challenges and difficulties. But, “normal” becomes natural again! If you’re a man of faith, that can certainly play a huge roll in your success and growth. There is no place you can go, physically or emotionally, where God cannot reach. He may not grant immediate healing, but he will always offer guidance and perspective. The question of “Why me?” was prevalent from the beginning, and lasts to this day. Initially, it was from a position of anger and frustration. Now, it’s from a postion of gratitude and humility. At the point where I became more physically healthy than I’d ever been before, I still recall one thought. Why was I so fortunate? While it wasn't a “snap of the fingers” healing, it certainly seems like that when I look back on where I’ve come from. Family and friends call it a miracle. And it is. Just not in the sense we’d normally think of a miracle. It was a miracle of acceptance. Fortitude. Guidance. In some ways, the new normal isn’t quite the same as the old normal. In many other ways, it’s much better. I look back and think, “I don't deserve the blessings I’ve been given.” That’s a feeling I could never have fathomed at the beginning of this long road. Take it a step at a time. Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t dwell on how the easy seems hard. One day at a time. One goal at a time. You’ll get there too! |
