He was traveling eastbound with lights and siren activated, attempting to overtake a speeder, when a vehicle turned left in front him. He was transported to Mercy San Juan Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Deputy Canfield had served with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department for 13 years and was assigned to the Rancho Cordova Police Department through contract. Police Officer Molly Suzanne Thomas-Bowden Columbia Missouri Police Department End of Watch: Thursday, February 10, 2005 Biographical Info Age: 26 Tour of Duty: 3 years, 6 months Badge Number: 207 Incident Details Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of Incident: Monday, January 10, 2005 Weapon Used: Handgun; .380 caliber Suspect Info: Shot and killed Officer Molly Thomas-Bowden succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained one month earlier when she was shot during a traffic stop. The officer was initially shot and wounded in the shoulder. As she retreated to the rear of the suspect's vehicle for cover, the suspect exited and shot her in the neck. After she fell to the ground, the suspect shot at her two more times, striking her in the neck again. The following morning, the suspect shot and wounded a second Columbia officer who was staking out his mother's home. The suspect then committed suicide. Officer Thomas-Bowden had served with the agency for 3 1/2 years. She is survived by her husband, also an officer with the Columbia Police Department, two stepsons, parents, and a brother. Nearly 4 years later, you are not forgotten. |

Belived to be somewhere near oswego. An EMT Volunteer from the Cape Vincent Fire Department was shot and killed overnight, while responding to a medical emergency. State Police said Mark Davis, 25, Cape Vincent, arrived at an apartment at 114 Esseltyne Street in Cape Vincent around 11:30 Friday Night. Immediately, Davis started treating the person who made the emergency call, Christopher Burke, 25, Sherrill, NY. After a while, Burke grew agitated and started talking about guns, police said. Davis, as well as another EMT Volunteer got nervous and decided to leave the apartment. Burke apparently ran into another room and grabbed a high-power rifle and fired off two shots at Davis, then tried fleeing the scene. The other EMT Volunteer, who was with Davis, tackled Burke to the ground until police arrived. Burke was arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Murder and Criminal Possession of a Weapon (4th). Steve has been a cop for over 20 years, he was very active in Kanes Dare program. Steve was a good man. Oakland Police Department California End of Watch: Saturday, March 21, 2009 Incident Details Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of Incident: Saturday, March 21, 2009 Weapon Used: Gun; Unknown type Suspect Info: Killed by other officers Sergeant Mark Dunakin and Officer John Hege were shot and killed during a traffic stop at 74th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard. During the stop, the driver opened fire, killing Sergeant Dunakin and mortally wounding Officer Hege. Citizens who witnessed the incident called 911 and started CPR on both officers. The suspect fled on foot, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of officers from the Oakland Police Department, California Highway Patrol and Alameda County Sheriff’s Department. At approximately 3:30 pm the Oakland Police Department received an anonymous tip that the suspect was barricaded inside an apartment building on 74th Avenue. Officers first attempted to negotiate with the suspect, but when that failed a SWAT team was sent into the location to apprehend the suspect. As the SWAT officers approached, the suspect opened fired with a rifle, killing Sergeant Ervin Romans and Sergeant Daniel Sakai, and wounding a third officer. Officers returned fire, killing the 26-year-old male suspect. It was later determined that the suspect had an extensive violent criminal history and was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon. At the time of the incident he had a no-bail parole warrant. Sergeant Dunakin had served with the Oakland Police Department for 17 years and is survived by his wife and three children. Sergeant Romans had served with the Oakland Police Department for 13 years and had previously served with the United States Marine Corps. Sergeant Sakai had served with the Oakland Police Department for nine years. |

I recently found out about an officer for a near by agency that committed suicide with a fire arm....I think the investigation is still ongoing so I can't really say much but I think the officer deserves some prayers. Thank you all.

 Senior Corporal Norman Smith Dallas Police Department Texas End of Watch: Tuesday, January 6, 2009 Biographical Info Age: 43 Tour of Duty: 18 years Badge Number: 6613 Incident Details Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of Incident: Tuesday, January 6, 2009 Weapon Used: Gun; Unknown type Suspect Info: Apprehended Senior Corporal Norman Smith was shot and killed as he attempted to serve an arrest warrant. Corporal Smith and several members of the Gang Unit went to a home on Wadsworth Drive in Dallas to service an arrest warrant for aggravated assault. When Corporal Smith knocked on the front door of the home, he was shot and killed. Members of the Dallas Police SWAT team were able to make entry into the apartment and arrest three suspects, including the suspected shooter. Corporal Smith had served with the Dallas Police Department for 18 years and was assigned to the Gang Unit. His murder occurred on the day before this 18th anniversary with the department. Sergeant Randy White Bridgeport Police Department Texas End of Watch: Thursday, April 2, 2009 Biographical Info Age: 32 Tour of Duty: 5 years Badge Number: Not available Incident Details Cause of Death: Vehicle pursuit Date of Incident: Thursday, April 2, 2009 Weapon Used: Automobile Suspect Info: Charged with capital murder Sergeant Randy White was killed when his patrol car was struck from behind by a stolen vehicle being pursued by other officers Texas 114, near Farm Road 2123. The pursuit had started earlier in the day when a Wise County deputy attempted to stop the suspect following a hit-and-run accident. The suspect was able to evade officers, but was located a short time later in a stolen vehicle and another pursuit was initiated. Sergeant White was clearing Texas 114 of traffic ahead of the pursuit and was parked on the shoulder when the suspect rammed the rear of his cruiser, pushing it into the back of a pickup truck hauling a trailer. The suspect was injured in the accident. He was charged with capital murder. Sergeant White had served with the Bridgeport Police Department for 5 years. He is survived by his wife and 5-year-old daughter. |

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Florida End of Watch: Wednesday, August 15, 2007 Biographical Info Age: 55 Tour of Duty: 29 years Badge Number: 1664 Incident Details Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of Incident: Wednesday, August 15, 2007 Weapon Used: Gun; Unknown type Suspect Info: Shot and killed Sergeant Ron Harrison was shot and killed while sitting in his patrol car. He had just finished a DWI checkpoint and was sitting in his patrol car near the intersection of Lumsden Road and Kings Avenue in the town of Brandon, when a suspect approached his vehicle and fired into the car through the open passenger side window, striking Sergeant Harrison multiple times. Sergeant Harrison activated his lights and siren and tried to drive off but lost control of his patrol car, struck another vehicle and then crashed into a tree. The sergeant was taken to Brandon Community Hospital, where he died from his wounds. A short time later, a woman called 911 saying her boyfriend may have been involved in the shooting of a deputy and was at a home. A SWAT team then converged on that home and negotiations began with the suspect who was barricaded inside. The suspect fired multiple shots at the SWAT team, who returned fire, killing him. Sergeant Harrison had served in law enforcement for 29 years. He is survived by his four children. |

Florida Highway Patrol Florida End of Watch: Friday, January 12, 2007 Biographical Info Age: 48 Tour of Duty: 24 years Badge Number: Not available Incident Details Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of Incident: Friday, January 12, 2007 Weapon Used: Handgun; .25 caliber Suspect Info: Apprehended Sergeant Nicholas Sottile was shot and killed during a traffic stop at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Whitmore Road in Highlands County. During the stop one of the two occupants produced a handgun and shot Sergeant Sottile in the chest. Despite being mortally wounded, Sergeant Sottile was able to notify dispatchers that he had been shot. He was transported to Florida Hospital Lake Placid where he was pronounced dead approximately one hour later. Both assailants fled the scene but were arrested early the following morning following a massive manhunt. Sergeant Sottile had served with the Florida Highway Patrol for 24 years and was assigned to Troop F in Bradenton. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and son. At the time of the incident, his son also served with the Florida Highway Patrol. |

The officer, 28-year-old James Manor, was trapped in his patrol car for several minutes before emergency responders were able to extricate him and take him to University Medical Center. The Clark High School graduate who was 13 days shy of marking his second year with the department was pronounced dead not long after arriving at the hospital, Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie said. “Today is a dark day for the Metro police family,” Gillespie said. Police identified the suspect as 45-year-old Calvin Darling, who has no criminal history. Police said Darling was trying to make a left turn onto Ravenwood Drive from westbound Flamingo Road, near Rainbow Boulevard, in a pickup at 12:46 a.m. He turned in front of Manor and a second patrol car that were heading east on Flamingo, police said. Manor tried to avoid the truck but couldn’t and the two vehicles collided, Gillespie said. The officer in the second patrol car reported the incident. Gillespie said investigators determined Darling was drunk through an interview and blood tests. Darling was taken to UMC with non-life threatening injuries and is expected to be booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of felony driving under the influence resulting in death and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. “This shows you how quickly tragedy can strike,” Gillespie said. “Many times getting to the call is just as dangerous as handling the call.” |

Del Rio, Texas Border Patrol Station End of Watch: Thursday, May 21, 2009 Tour of Duty: 24 years Del Rio, Texas - U.S. Customs and Border Protection suffered the loss of a Border Patrol agent Thursday morning, while on duty along the Texas border in Del Rio, Texas. While working with other agents, Senior Patrol Agent Cruz McGuire, a 47-year-old Del Rio native was tracking a group of illegal aliens near Del Rio when he collapsed. Although CPR was administered and emergency medical services were rendered, Agent McGuire died at Val Verde Regional Medical Center in Del Rio, Texas. Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Randy Hill expressed his condolences to family, friends, and co-workers of Agent McGuire, saying “As emblematic of Cruz’s career dedication, he was working a trail with fellow agents when he collapsed. He was doing exactly what he wanted to do each and every day.” Agent McGuire entered on duty with the U.S. Border Patrol on September 30, 1984 as part of the 166th Session of the U.S. Border Patrol Academy. Agent McGuire is survived by his son Patrick, two daughters Marie and Jessica; father Cruz McGuire Sr., a retired 25-year veteran of legacy U.S. Customs, and mother Gloria; two brothers Scott and Richard; and a sister, Linda. A plain-clothes Chicago police officer died this afternoon after being shot in the head and critically wounded early this morning in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.
Alejandro "Alex" Valadez, 27, died about 2:40 p.m., police Supt. Jody Weis said. Valadez is the third officer killed in the line-of-duty in the past 12 months. Officer Nathaniel Taylor, 39, a 14-year veteran, was shot and killed in September while trying to execute a search warrant against a suspected narcotics dealer. Officer Richard Francis, 60, was fatally shot in July during a struggle with a woman causing a disruption on a bus. Standing outside of Stroger Hospital, Weis confirmed that Valadez had died. He said Valadez had been on life support and his family had donated his organs. Weis called Valadez, a "great officer'' who had distinguished himself in his three-year career. Valadez's shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the 6000 block of South Hermitage Avenue as the three-year veteran and his partner were investigating a report of shots fired, Weis said at a news conference earlier today after the shooting. In addition to a head wound, Valadez was wounded in the leg, Weis said. Valadez was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition and died there later. Valadez joined the Chicago Police Department in December 2005 and was most recently assigned to the Englewood District, police said. Valadez earned a department commendation and 22 honorable mentions. More information to follow when released. |

Sergeant Andrew (Andy) Tingwall New Mexico State Police New Mexico End of Watch: Thursday, June 11, 2009 Biographical Info Age: 36 Tour of Duty: Not available Badge Number: Not available Incident Details Cause of Death: Aircraft accident Date of Incident: Tuesday, June 9, 2009 Weapon Used: Not available Suspect Info: Not available Sergeant Andy Tingwall died following a police helicopter crash on a mountainside near Santa Fe, New Mexico. He and a police observer had just taken off after rescuing a stranded hiker when the helicopter struck the mountainside and crashed. Despite being severely injured, the observer was able to hike from the area the following the morning and was located by a rescue party. An intense search was initiated but rescuers had difficulty reaching the crash site due to weather and terrain. The bodies of Sergeant Tingwall and the hiker were located two days later when rescuers were able to reach the site. It was determined that Sergeant Tingwall survived the initial crash and had removed the injured hiker from the wreckage before passing away. Andy was the best of the best, and my friend. Go with God Brother! Sgt. Andrew F. "Andy" Tingwall Sgt. Andrew F. "Andy" Tingwall served with the New Mexico State Police since 1995 and graduated with the 56th New Mexico State Police Recruit School. His first post was District 6 in Gallup, NM. In 1998 he was moved to the Training and Recruiting Division at the New Mexico Law Enforcement Acadamy. Sgt. Tingwall spent five years at the Academy where he was the lead instructor for the Recruit School. During his time at the Academy, Sgt. Tingwall was part of the NMSP Tactical Team for five years as an entry man. Sgt. Tingwall was transferred to the New Mexico State Police Aircraft Section in 2003, where he logged 1,300 hours flying time as a pilot. In 2008 he was named the Chief Pilot of this Section. Sgt. Tingwall was named 2008 Officer of the Year in March 2009 by the New Mexico Sheriffs and Police Association for his lifesaving efforts in an August 2008 arroyo rescue of an Albuquerque man. He was to be honored by his fellow state police officers this month with a Medal of Valor for the same incident. Sgt. Tingwall is survived by his wife and two daughters. |

Chambers County Sheriff's Office Texas End of Watch: Monday, July 13, 2009 Biographical Info Age: 31 Tour of Duty: 6 years Badge Number: Not available Incident Details Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of Incident: Monday, July 13, 2009 Weapon Used: Gun; Unknown type Suspect Info: Deceased Deputy Shane Detwiler was shot and killed as he and a state trooper searched a mobile home after responding to the scene of a shooting. The initial shooting occurred when a female occupant of the mobile home fired at a utility worker who was attempting to shut the home's water off. Deputy Detwiler and two troopers responded to the scene and took the female into custody. Deputy Detwiler and one of the troopers then began to search the home for other occupants. When they reached the back bedroom, the woman's husband opened fire, fatally wounding Deputy Detwiler. The trooper returned fire as he dragged Deputy Detwiler from the home. The male subject, who was a former reserve police officer, was found dead from a gunshot wound approximately nine hours later. Deputy Detwiler had served with the Chambers County Sheriff's Office for only two months. He had previously served as a game warden with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and as a special agent with the U.S. Army Military Intelligence while deployed to Iraq. Sergeant Joe Harris of Sandoval County Sheriff's Office (in New Mexico) was shot by a burglary suspect on Thursday, 9-16-09, at 0400 hours and died at the hospital. The suspect was shot and killed by another deputy. The suspect has only been identified as the "Cookie Bandit" so far....

Police officials say Sgt. Steve May's death Thursday makes him the second officer to die in the line of duty in the department's 118-year history. Both officers died in vehicle chases. The 53-year-old May never regained consciousness after the 2002 accident that also claimed the life of the 18-year-old suspect. Joshua Corralejo had been wanted for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer at the time of the chase. May suffered a fractured skull and multiple internal injuries and broken bones. The chase finally ended near Mount Vernon when the suspected gunman exited the interstate, pulled into a police station where he was taken into custody about 4:30 p.m. At 5 p.m. the owner of a home in the 19500 block of Silver Creek Road –– the street to which Jackson had initially responded –– returned from work and found two construction workers shot to death. Another person was found shot to death on a street in the vicinity, but the exact location was not known.

Captain Dennis Darrell Cagle
Henderson Police Department Henderson, Tennessee End of Watch: Sunday, December 13, 2009 Captain Dennis Cagle succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained three days earlier when he responded to the scene of a robbery in progress at a local grocery store. Captain Cagle was the first officer on the scene and was shot once in the abdomen upon entering the store. Despite being wounded, Captain Cagle returned fire, along with a responding Chester County deputy, wounding the suspect several times. The man was taken into custody at the scene. Captain Cagle had served with the Henderson Police Department for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and two step-daughters. Members of the Arizona Department of Public Safety attempted to stop a vehicle bearing stolen license plates. The vehicle failed to stop and fled. A pursuit ensued, reaching speeds of over 100 Miles Per Hour. Officer Marano was laying out spike strips on the Loop 101 near Phoenix when he was struck and killed by a patrol car involved in the pursuit. The pursuit continued and the suspect was eventually apprehended during a foot chase after the she bailed out of her vehicle. Officer Marano had served with the Arizona Department of Public Safety for two years. He is survived by his wife and four children. ______________________ Rest in Peace Officers. _____ Missouri Trooper Struck, Killed Along Interstate 44 By George Sells FOX2now.com December 25, 2009 EUREKA, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - Members of the Missouri Highway Patrol are in mourning after a Christmas day accident on Interstate 44 near Eureka which left a trooper dead. Officials say Cpl. Dennis Engelhard had stopped to assist Eureka Police after an accident there about 9:30 Christmas morning. Engelhard waited with the people involved in the original crash for a tow truck. After about forty minutes, he got out of his car. It was just about the time an oncoming S-U-V lost control. "He exited his vehicle and walked to the rear of his vehicle where he was struck by an SUV," MSHP Sergeant Jeff Wilson told reporters near the scene. Wilson would not elaborate on why troopers believe the vehicle lost control, only saying, "any time you have conditions like this it always plays a role," making reference to the snow that was falling at the time of the crash. Wilson wouldn't say if the driver of the SUV is likely to face charges, only acknowledging that troopers are still investigating the wreck. He did imply that the vehicle was out of control when it hit Cpl. Engelhard. "I know after Cpl Engelhard was struck the SUV then went off into an embankment," he said. Engelhard was 49 years old and single. His family lives in the Kansas City area. He had been a trooper for ten years. Officials say his service began in the Franklin County area. He was later promoted to corporal and moved to St. Louis County. Sgt. Al Nothum worked with him for several years. "He was a very quiet man," Nothum said. "He didn't say much at all. I worked with him for several years out in Franklin County. He just showed up for work, did his job and took a lot of drunk drivers off the road." Nothum says the Christmas incident is a reminder that people need to take extra precautions when passing emergency vehicles and others pulled over to the side of a highway. "If you can see those lights a long way away that's when you slow down. That's when you start paying attention and really slowing your speed down and being ready for anything like hydroplaning on water or ice or snow. Don't wait until you get up right behind those lights. This has happened too many times." Engelhard's family was said to be on the way to the St. Louis area. Funeral arrangements are still pending. |

Guntersville Alabama Police officer shot in the spine in 1993 dies.
Former Guntersville Police Officer Tommy Bishop, who was shot while answering a domestic disturbance call in 1993, died Friday morning at Marshall Medical Center North. An officer at Guntersville some 5 years, the Arab resident previously worked with the Marshall County Sheriff's Department. Cecil Eugene Looney, now 43, who had also shot his wife at the time of the incident, shot Bishop in the spine, just below his protective vest, paralyzing him below the waist. His son, Arab City Councilman Brian Bishop, spoke just last month at a parole hearing for Looney before the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles. Bishop said his father had suffered multiple medical problems as a result of the shooting and went to UAB for treatment at least once a month since the incident. Bedridden for several years, Bishop spent the last year of his life in an Albertville nursing home. Brian Bishop said Friday his father's death "is a bitter pill to swallow." Looney, originally sentenced to 70 years in prison for shooting Bishop and another 10 years for shooting his wife, was denied parole. The parole board said he won't be eligible for parole consideration again until December 2014. |

An off-duty Alexandria police officer, Patrick Callaghan, was killed in a snowmobile crash Friday evening.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and North Ambulance were called to the scene of a two-snowmobile crash on the Central Lakes Trail near Liberty Road east of Alexandria at about 8:10 p.m. last night, according to the sheriff’s office. Upon arrival, deputies found two male victims injured – Callaghan, 31, of Alexandria and Mark Ruder, 25, of Glencoe. Both victims were transported to Douglas County Hospital and later airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). Callaghan died at HCMC. As of 1 p.m., Ruder was listed in serious condition at HCMC. The accident is under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota State Patrol. Callaghan was hired in November of 2007. His family has a rich history of law enforcement service going back to his great-great grandfather. He is the son of Jeff and Deb Callaghan of rural Carlos. Jeff is a former Douglas County sheriff's chief deputy. The Alexandria Police Department issued the following statement: "On January 29, Alexandria Police officer, Patrick Callaghan, was killed in a snowmobile accident. Patrick was off-duty at the time. This is a great loss for the Callaghan family, the Alexandria Police Department, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the city of Alexandria, which is the community Patrick served in. This is a great loss to all of us. Funeral arrangements will be announced when they are set." Our whole LE program will be standing along the Procession route. |

TX-NM Medevac Crashes No Survivors
The three-member crew of a Southwest Med Evac helicopter died when the aircraft crashed during a training flight at McGregor Range. Officials from Omniflight said in a news release that the helicopter’s pilot and two paramedics were fatally injured when it crashed as it approached a landing zone Friday night. The helicopter was not transporting a patient at the time. Officials say 31-year-old officer Kevin Wilkins was on duty inside his patrol car at Kentucky and Baltic Avenues around 1:20am when he was killed by the single gunshot wound. Investigators says Wilkns removed the ammunition clip from the gun but did not clear the chamber. The 2½-year veteran was pronounced dead at the scene. Funeral arrangements were pending. |

St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department District 2 End of Watch: Wednesday, March 24, 2010 Incident Details Cause of Death: Vehicle pursuit Date of Incident: Wednesday, March 24, 2010 Weapon Used: Automobile Suspect Info: Charged with murder Officer David Haynes was killed in an automobile accident while involved in a vehicle pursuit of a burglary suspect. The pursuit was traveling down Kingshighway when another car pulled out of Oleatha Street and collided with Officer Haynes' patrol car. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver who was fleeing the pursuit was subsequently captured and confessed. He was charged with murder for causing Officer Haynes' death and two counts of burglary. Officer Haynes had served with the agency for only one year. He is survived by his wife. |
