I was one of 700 people summoned for duty this past Monday. The pool looked to fairly representative of the ethnic makeup of Collin County, TX. I got there early to make sure I got a good parking spot. There was a gathering of wack-jobs waving signs and flags, and "legitimate" media. I didn't have to walk past them. I was directed to the jury selection room that could likely seat 800 or more. The Judge, John Roach, is a highly respected jurist. He has been on the bench for at least a decade. He has not lost in any reelections. He said he had told both teams that this case would be prosecuted in a timely many, and that his goal was to wrap it up 6/12 which was only 11 days in the future. He did not know if the jury would be sequestered. Judge Roach spent nearly two hours going over the nature and responsibility of jury duty. He has a great sense of humor so the time spent in the conference room didn't drag by too slowly. Of the 700 summoned, about 60 were dismissed because they were either prohibited from serving (i.e. felon) or excused (mother on minor child). We were then directed to leave the room and wait outside in the hallway. After an hour, we were told to come back in and to present identification. Numbers were handed out. Every chair had a number. I sat in mine. This as followed by more lecturing and then it was opened to questions. The same purple-haired chick kept asking questions. I'm praying that God does not put me on a jury with her or anyone like her. At this point, the judge got deathly serious about the consequences of disobeying his instructions, and that he would send constables out to arrest and haul in anyone for not reporting if they made the second cut but didn't show up. The judge said that the case would be based on evidence and not on some sort of political or cultural ax to grind. The only thing allowed in the jury room would be the evidence of the charge. He was very clear about that. The prosecuting team was introduced. The defense team was then introduced along with the defendant. We were then handed out a three page questionnaire that asked about ethnicity, etc, and sources of news that we watch. I named the local Fox affiliate, FoxNews.com, and AR15.com. I had decided to answer all questions truthfully and to let the cards fall as they made. We were then dismissed with instructions to not discuss the case with anyone and to not watch any news sources. We were told to wait for an email/text Tuesday evening informing us as to whether we had much the cut down to 250 from which the jury would be chosen. If not chosen we were no longer prohibited from discussing the case with anyone. I received both a text and an email informing me that I was not one of the 250 and that my service was appreciated by the court. There was a certain sense of relief. I left impressed with the nature of at least the front end of the process. |

Most people ignore those instructions anyway. I was on a jury a few years ago, when we went on lunch break I headed down to a Longhorn Steakhouse a couple of blocks away. One of the other jurors, a black woman, was also there chatting it up with someone on her phone about the trial, loudly and in great detail. It was a stupid trial and her talking really didn't matter but it just goes to show you that people will and do talk, women especially. |

I'm guessing it's more so they can go after people who violate the order than out of any expectation that just telling everyone will be 100% effective. There was a 2 week hostage situation in a prison guard tower here. The last time I actually went to jury duty (call in the night before to see if they actually want you) they were selecting jurors for this. We were all in the main room and they were calling names and asking if they could do a 6 month trial. Luckily I was already picked for a different case to begin the process. |

There have been several claims over the last few years that Fed agencies speak to victim's families after events like this and instruct them on how to respond to the media, usually suggesting that if they want to see a fair trial and prosecution for the crime, they need to be quiet and not stir up racial tension or say anything inflammatory. If you come out and make a media shit show out of it, then they might make sure it doesn't get prosecuted or charges get reduced. |

Two to three hours of questioning. Sent us to lunch for an hour or so, then when we returned they made the selections. Fortunately I got booted and was excused and didn’t have to go back. |
