It was a bit of a PITA but I did pick up on a few things. |

No idea what it is called these days, but back when I was teaching, it was the ERC - Experienced Rider Course. I liked teaching that one a lot because it was only one day. Worthwhile even for longtime riders; they would come up to me after the class and mention that they learned things they didn't know even after having ridden for over 20 years. (It wasn't me, it was the curriculum. As long as you covered what the big yellow binder contained, the students got a lot out of it.) |

I've been coaching the ARC Advanced Rider Course for a few years. I'm usually leading that class about 15, 20 times each summer . The ARC is freaking awesome. Yeah, it's on your bike. If you chose poorly, you'll quickly learn about the limitations of anything "but it looks cool!". I just love the guys who show up with the utterly stupid Hiyabusa with the hugely extended swingarms and all the other dumb accessories. "... But my bike doesn't corner well now!". Right you are. Some drills are similar to BRC exercises. However, it's a bigger, heavier bike, you approach at higher speeds, and complexity is in increased. Instead of a quick stop at 15 mph on a 400 lb GZ250, you're doing a quick stop at 25 mph on your 800 lb Harley and then immediately evading to the side to avoid being rear-ended by the imaginary dump truck behind you... Other exercises are totally unlike BRC. They add a whole new level of skills, and deal with rider body position, advanced braking techniques, trail braking, etc. In most classes I see a direct, immediate improvement in rider performance. Initial stops are often 35-40 feet. Withing 10 minutes the same rider on the same bike is making more controlled 15 foot stops. That's a big improvement. An opinion: new riders who just learned to ride usually do not "get much" out of the ARC. My opinion is that they are overwhelmed, and do not necessarily have the comfort and experience needed to really get the most out of the ARC. Ideally, id suggest 1,000 or more miles before taking the ARC. The class can also be very challenging for experienced riders who show up with a bike that is completely new to them. This isn't cast in concrete gospel truth, just an observation derived from coaching the class a bunch The ARC, as described, is likely "going away". The brain trust that leads MSF has decided the ARC should be discontinued in many states. It's supposed to be replaced by a sort of new ARC, where coaches pick and choose exercises at their discretion. I suspect this ARC over here could be awesome, while that one over there could totally suck. Your mileage may vary. In its wisdom, MSF discontinued the ARC but hasnt yet released the new replacement course ( this may vary, state to state). I will not comment further on the intelligence or exceptional planning and execution of this move.... The students who take the existing ARC generally love it. I get groups who return and retake the ARC every year, since they enjoy the experience that much. Your mileage may vary. |

So far *knock on wood* so good but wow the amount of people cali rolling stop signs when Im coming through or simply straight blasting through them without a care in the world is crazy. Its happened every day Ive been on it so far Im a bit more nervous about it than I was the other day My youngest(shes 2) loved my mini bike. She also loves my new bike. Ill get home and shell say 'daddies bike! daddies bike!'. I asked her what she thought about it yesterday after saying that She came back with 'lots injury!' Freaked me out man |

It wasnt my riding I was worried about, it was the growing trend of retards with phone screens in their face that made the choice easy. |

Ended up in a crash caused by a stupid error that I 100% would have avoided if I went to MSF. Also ended up with bad enough road rash that I couldn't work for a week. Never got back on the bike after that. This go around, MSF first is a personal requirement for buying a bike. I'll look for a used jacket and pants before I buy as well. Definitely not skipping gloves ever either. If you're going to keep riding before you take the course, find an empty parking lot and practice. Not being competent at panic stops is what got me. |

OP, if you don't mind a little cleanup work, FB Marketplace, Nextdoor, and even Craigslist can help you find some damn good deals on used gear (but not a helmet!) I bought the basic necessities right away but have been adding the "Nice to Haves" as I go, some new on sale, some used at a good or great price. |

MSF Coaches... Do they still mark you down if you "cover the brake"? When I took the course with my wife she got the top class score because I refused to NOT cover the brake. I've always been front brake centric rider. I found that I needed to tone that down when teaching newbies in the dirt. |

I don't mean to hijack the thread but this thread is directly to blame. I haven't owned a bike or ridden in 15 years (last had a TL1000R). Seeing the supermoto that OP got created a spark in my soul that led to me watching various supermoto Youtube videos nonstop ever since. I found a local dealer that still had a new '24 DRZ400SM and better yet was discounted since the all new '25 DRZ4S is out. So I went and bought it this morning.  They let me test ride it since I was nervous about getting back on a bike after all this time. I wore shorts not actually thinking I'd be buying a bike so I didn't ride it home and will pick it up later today after I change into some jeans. I got a helmet, jacket, & gloves when I bought it so I'm good on that end and will gets some boots too.

For you experienced guys, a question. I'm looking at different exhausts for the bike I'm picking up soon. I found a smoking Ebay deal on an Austin Racing slip-on. Does this look legit? It is $800 cheaper than a new one from Austin Racing. Attached File Below is a screenshot from the Austin Racing website. I can't tell if the EBay offering is legit or not. It seems really close. Hell yes. Congrats. Yall got all these new bikes and I'm out here scrubbing it with my beater. But yes. The same thing happened to me. I started looking at supermoto videos bc my buddy sent me some. Then they kept coming. And then I needed one and browsed FB marketplace for months to find the right one. |

I'm right at 4k all in with my KTM with the new plastics and sumo wheels. I said that I would put the dirt set on and take it to the mountains, but I havent done it once... Had a coworker who's dad won about $1 million in the lottery. Not sure of the exact model but he immediately went out and bought basically the biggest, most expensive Harley Davidson he could get. He'd never had a motorcycle before. The coworker left for another job a bit over two years later and a far as I know the dad had still never ridden the Harley by that time. CSB |
