I've told this before. EdSr and I were turkey hunting in his pretty large property in NY. It was a former farm with fields and trees. We set up a little ways apart and Ed was calling for turkeys although we hadn't seen many. Eventually he stops and waves me over. I get there and Ed is talking to another hunter. This guy had heard Ed calling and apparently decided Ed was a turkey and started stalking in on him. Ed heard or saw him and confronted him. He made some bullshit claim about thinking he had permission from someone who owned land a long ways away, like a dot on the horizon. Ed asked me to throw him off because I think Ed was about to beat the shit out of him. I'm a casual hunter but otherwise I've personally had good luck with other hunters. My wife and I used to stumble across hunters when we were hiking in TN, VA and PA and everyone was safe and cool. We should've worn orange. One day we pulled off the road and were going to go hiking in some state forest land (I think in PA) we got out of the car and I said "Wait a minute!" Something was up. I didn't see any vehicle around but I heard odd rustlings. next to the woods was a field. I saw a bunch of faces peek out of goose blinds on the ground I shrugged and we creeped quietly back to the car and drove off ![]() |
| I've shot and killed a lot of shit, only 1 deer however. Never mattered if I had 0 or 15 fuckin beers, I'm not pulling the goddamn trigger if I don't know what the fuck it is and what's behind it. I've let some meat walk because I wasn't in-love with the backstop area. Not risking it. |

The worst part about this thread is how many people go “walking through the woods during deer season?” or “why weren’t they wearing hunter orange?” It’s nowhere near deer season through out the nation. That’s why he was arrested. I walk through the woods all the time in khaki and OD green. You should be able to do that without thinking some old douchebag is going to mistake you for a deer. |

Walter Moorhead of Salisbury, Maryland, was charged with manslaughter and related crimes after allegedly shooting the woman while hunting Friday evening in a field near Ellendale, Delaware, according to the Delaware State Police. "The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was walking through the field with a man and two children while Moorhead was hunting deer from a ground blind. Moorhead believed he saw a deer and fired his rifle, striking the victim," the Delaware State Police said in a statement. The victim was identified Sunday as 39-year-old Santos Maria Chilel Soto of Georgetown, Delaware, according to the state police. The incident unfolded around 7:40 p.m. on Friday, according to the state police, who said troopers who were called to the scene provided lifesaving medical care to the victim, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Troopers took Moorehead into custody after a preliminary investigation "determined that he had fired the shot that struck the victim," according to the state police. In addition to the charge of felony manslaughter, Moorhead is facing three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, as well as a count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, state police said. Moorhead was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court and released after posting a $43,000 cash bond, according to the state police. Usually 3 to 5 times in my state during deer hunting. Typically they just shoot their buddy who went down to take a shit and brought white toilet paper, they shoot at the white thinking it's a whitetail deer, and kill or maim their hunting partner. |

Common with turkey hunting too, because hunters are in full camo making turkey noises, and some idiot doesn't identify his target and instead shoots at noise. |

“Santos Maria Chilel Soto”… With a name like that, this hunter was probably saving ICE from having to spend manpower and resources to find, arrest and deport her! That aside, Delaware being the deep blue lefty state that it is, sure threw every possible thing they could at him! “Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony”?? It was à hunting accident, not bank robbery ffs! |

I can think of two over the past 20 years or so in my area alone. One was about 5 years ago when a man was shot on state park land near here by a hunter : An 18-year-old male——was fatally shot at Nockamixon State Park in October 2020 while sitting with his girlfriend. The IncidentVictim: 18-year-old Jason Albert Kutt of Sellersville, PA.Date & Location: October 24, 2020, around 5:15 p.m. near the Old Ridge Road access overlooking Lake Nockamixon.Event: Kutt and his girlfriend were sitting at the edge of the lake watching the sunset when a single shot fired from about 550 feet away struck Kutt in the back of the neck/head. He passed away two days later at St. Luke's Hospital-Bethlehem.Arrest and SentencingSuspect: Kenneth Troy Heller, 52, of Warminster, PA. Details: Investigators determined Heller was hunting with a rare .17 caliber rifle and mistakenly fired at Kutt, thinking he was an animal. Heller surrendered to authorities in December 2020.Resolution: In July 2021, Heller pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, recklessly endangering another person, weapons charges, and hunting violations. He was sentenced to seven to 20 years in state prison I can't find anything but paywall links for these others, but there have been a number of incidents ( I found 3 locally that occurred over the past 5 years ) over the years during Turkey season when people have gotten shot by hunters mistaking them for prey. One stands out to me because of the irony involved. Two hunters were maybe 25-50 yards apart, both using calls to call in a turkey. Each hunter thought the other one was a bird. One of them ended up shooting the other. Statistical anomaly ? I won't argue with that because the data backs that up, but at the same time I stay out of the woods in the local park/SGL around here once deer/turkey season opens up. The roadsides full of the parked cars of hunters combing the woods for deer, and the woods are thick with hunters. There are so many hunters in those woods I am actually surprised there aren't more accidents. When Sunday hunting opened up here I was kind of annoyed because that kind of puts limits on how often I can get outside with my dog in the woods around here. I'll probably end up taking her to the state forest lands a little further north here where I think the number of people in the woods will probably be a little less. Before someone jumps on me about my " annoyed " comment, I have no problem with hunting. Used to do it in my youth and I think hunters around here and in NJ need to step up their game to reduce the deer population in these areas. I am merely disappointed that the Sunday off leash walks with my dog I enjoyed in the past are more difficult now. I sort of wish they had put limits or restrictions on where that Sunday hunting can take place, such as limit it SGL only but not state forests, etc.... |

Tragedy. Buck fever is a thing. as well as a count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony Seriously? |
ProTip: Never pick a fight with a tree planter. He swings a hoedad for 9 hours a day, carries 30-40 pounds of seedlings on his back, and has 12-14 friends just like him hiding out on the other side of the junk butt pile. They will fuck your shit up.

| Been hunting most of my life and from my experience it would be virtually impossible to mistake a human for a deer unless its obscured by some cover in which case you should even take the shot.... or you are so blind you shouldn't be in the woods with a gun. |

I've run over a few red/orange extension cords laying in the grass. There might be a reason why "lime green" has become the predominant color for hi-viz safety attire. It works for everyone. Stupid State of WI DOT tried orange striping for highway lanes which tended to almost disappear under certain conditions. Fortunately, they gave up on that. |

My son took Hunter Safety last summer and there is an 8-hour “field day” with class and outdoor time including shooting and gun handling. I ended up staying the whole day and it was a good refresher and a well-done class. There was a long session about knowing your target and beyond. They have a video of people talking about real life accidents and what went wrong. Deer look like nothing else. And if you need to have antlers, even less so. |

It makes absolutely zero difference for the deer and I’m usually up in a tree-stand anyway. |

This happened about 10 minutes from where I grew up. There's a lot of misinformation in this thread on Delaware hunting law. Regular deer season is archery from 9/1 to 1/31, with gun seasons mixed in throughout starting in October. With a deer damage permit, the season opens from 8/15 to 5/15 with the ability to use any weapon for that duration for antler less deer. Here's the interesting part, as someone here is in the wrong in a whole other way. Permits are only granted to applying landowners and the people that landowner specific lists. The hunter is from MD 45 minutes away. He MAY be on that list, but it's unconfirmed. If he is on that list, and was hunting legally, the family was walking on private property during what is a pretty intense hunting season if you're permit hunting (I've killed 6 does since 9/1 on permit). Were they trespassing? If so, had they been warned before? If so, the hunter might be in deeper water than manslaughter, as he has motive and it may not have been an accident at all. |

Especially when they are the best months of the year to be outside, as they are here in FL. I leave most of my local nat forest alone during gun season, because a) they run dogs, and b) I hunted every year for almost a decade, and understand they don't get to do it all year, so I let them have the 3 months, and c) my safety of course, and d) we have some public lands that have a higher concentration of cyclists that hunters with any sense are staying away from, historically and others where they aren't allowed. Some of my fellow cyclists don't agree with my "let them have a couple months to hunt," but not much I can do about that. Leave obvious sign that you are hunting down a road. I've turned around many times when I started down a road and encountered an obvious hunter's truck parked on the side of the road. |

He fucked up, and should be brought to justice, but this: "as well as a count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony" is the biggest bullshit, nanny-blue-state, "gotta get those criminal gun owners" charge I've ever seen. Literally fuck the person that added that charge on, I hope the rest of their career is hell. |
