Cowboy guide question. How do you lay your hat down? Two different opposing comments last nite in the bar: Opinion 1: Lay it on the crown to avoid flattening the rim, messing it up. Don the hat using a deep grip front and rear of the brim. Supports the brim and keeps hands from oiling or dirtying up the crown. Opinion 2: Lay it on the brim because it’s stiff enough to support it and you won’t get the crown dirty. Also, don the hat using the crown. Lift it gently by the brim until you can grasp the crown. I was told in my younger years to handle it by the brim, gently and adjust, snug it up by the crown , so as to not dirty up the crown. Others I’ve seen pick it up using one hand on the front of the brim and the other to the crown to set it on your head. I tend to lay it on the brim because I thought you’re not supposed to show the inside and sweatband. And I use the two hands, one to the brim close up to the crown and one on the crown to avoid bending the brim. Am I a dude for laying on the brim? Attached File Attached File |

Lay it upside down on a shelf or table right side up on a hat rack or deer horns where no weight is on the brim. Also when visiting someone you hang up your six gun when entering their house, not to do so is a sign you don’t trust them. That’s ….old cowboy rules. And even growing up in Texas in the 50’s I could count on one hand the number of real cowboys I’ve known. I have a photo of my grandfather in Alpine Texas 1924 with a covered wagon and mule team headed to his ranch on the Rio Grande ( government took it - now part of Big Bend National Park). Pancho Villa’s men worked the fields for pay in the summer and fought the war in Mexico in the winter. |
