Gents. I have a project on my hands. 69 honda trail 90 that has been stripped to the frame. Is there a online guide or a book that shows what pieces go where? Thanks The pile.

Well, I found a few online parts schematics but I also bought an old clymer mechanics book. Today was day 1 of putting the bike back together. I assembled the rear wheel and axle assembly. I ran into an issue with one of the tensioning units being broken so I had to make my own. I also looked at mounting the engine but I am finding out that it's not a plug-and-play motor. I have to modify the exhaust and build a foot peg bracket along with a lower motor mount bracket. Sure I could buy the brackets but how fun would that be? I also need to figure out how to modify the system to make it 12v, which is what the motor puts out. |

Cool! So are you using a new Lifan engine? I’ve thought of starting a thread here myself. I just bought a new carburetor off Amazon and a gasket set from EBay so I can service the centrifugal oil filter. I ordered Japanese Industry Standard bits that will be here tomorrow. I have to clean the gas tank of crud and varnish first and I pick up a battery tomorrow. Reddit has a couple Honda CT sites and YouTube is a wealth of information. Ebay has every part you can think that you might need for your project.Attached File |

From what I understand it’s a lot of work but worth it in the end. When I get done with mine I would like to tackle the same project on another that’s not as complete as the one I’m working on. I was 10 or 11 at the time. I cut that bag open and made it snow! I still miss those old Hondas. I had the Monkey 50. |

Well I didn't get a whole lot accomplished today. My step dad and I got a little sidetracked. We ended up spending a hour or so picking up this beauty. So now back to the green machine. I got the exhaust shaped and the plate that holds it into the head roughed in. That took me a while. I still need to fine tune it but we are close.  The fuel tank sealer had mostly set up but there were still some light spots so I put the rest of it in the tank and got it coated.  My step dad got the new tube installed in the front tire and it holds air, so that's a plus. We attempted to take the front struts apart to rebuild them but we just can't get it to separate. That will be revisited. Lastly I started on the foot peg adapter plate.

I have a Clymer service/ repair/ maintenance for 50-110cc sitting in my garage. I'll probaboy never use it again, but it's a Clymer M310-13 It's probably just a newer version of your manual, but if you think it would help you then PM me your address and I'll mail it to you. Only condition is you keep fixing em up and posting about them here; vintage Honda pitbikes rock! |

I only had a few hours to work on the bike. I got the engine plate mostly done. I still need to cut and weld some extensions on the kickstand/footpeg bar as there mounting bolts for the engine will interfere with the kickstand bracket. I also made some lower engine mount brackets. I may need to go with a heavier steel. Not sure yet.

I only had a few hours to mess with it but I did get the front forks put back together. New seals, springs, boots and I will add some fluid later. The new manual is awesome! Thanks NWJohnny

I had a chance to spend the afternoon on it. I had the fork tube upside down but that was an easy fix. I greased and installed the new ball bearings in the fork.     Once that was done I filled them with 140ccs of atf. Next I continued working on the engine mounting plate. I decided to make the lower engine mount straps out of a heavier gauge steel, so I had to cut and re bend the new ones to fit. Then I tac welded them in place to test fit everything.  Next I needed to figure out how to mount the footpeg bracket to the plate. I thought I was going to have enough room to install an engine mount bolt next to the footpeg mount hole but it was too close. So i had to cut and built small spacers and weld them to the engine plate. I will drill them out tomorrow.

You're a lot handier than me, I should send you my minitrail 50 for some work Mines a hardtail and the chain tensioner tabs are all bent, as is the place where the axle goes. I probably need to spend some time repairing those. It functions fine but is ugly. The minitrail is a death trap. The Lifan engines from ebay/ Amazon are pretty reliable if you ever have an engine that is not salvageable. |

I rode the minitrail to work exactly one time. It's plated through the Vermont loophole but I think a cop would take it if I was stopped where I live. It'll do 49mph, which is entirely too fast when the handlebars hit your knees. I really should invest in a new rear wheel and sprocket. Attached File |

Today I finished up the engine mount bracket. I cleaned up some of the welds and fitted the kick stand bracket to it. I realized I wouldn't have clearance above the bracket for the bolts as the heads would hit the motor. So i decided to grind down the heads, insert them in the holes and weld them. It worked out well.      After that was done I painted it and got everything installed. Next will be to mount the exhaust. |

I had a few hours to mess with the exhaust. I cut a chunk of it off so I could fit the collar. I tacked it together and once I was happy, I finished the welds. I will have to weld a sleeve over the gap as there is no way to make up the space. Luckily I can hide the sleeve with the cover that goes over that area.     Next I looked at the carburetor intake. Well the carb hits the frame so I need to research what intake to buy to get that to fit...  I also painted a few small parts. I went to touch up the fender and realized there was another crack so I had to weld it. I also found that rustoleum army green and krylon are different shades. So I went to ace, Walmart and big r looking for krylon. No luck. So I had to order off amazon..... That was the day. |

More parts should be here tomorrow. But I did get a few things done today. Oem Chain and guard installed. When I went to install the sprocket guard that came on the motor It would hit the oem guard on the bike. So I just cut a small piece of it off and it fit fine.   I also adjusted the rear Chain tension and tightened the axle down. I went to install the rear brake mechanism and a I noticed I was missing the bracket that goes from the rear brake drum to the swing arm. I contacted a buddy who has it so I will go get it sat. |

Ok. I got caught up in the shop and I had a chance to work on the bikes. First thing I did was try out my new plastic welder. What a neat little tool!    Next I worked on brush guard for the 69. I had to weld on a piece of flatbar to the guard then drill new holes. It took a lot of fit and finish time but it's done. I just need to get a longer bolt so I can bolt it to the engine. I also painted the fuel tank.

Love this thread. I was on a cruise last week and met an older couple from SC. We started chatting and next thing you know he’s offering to sell me his two classic Honda motorcycles. A ‘72 750 four and a 350 four. 750 has the Hondamatic trans. Sadly, no room since I don’t have a shop.

I bought one when I was a little kid $30 All my friends had XR75's and left me in the dust. I tried to adjust the carburetor and totally screwed it up. Begged my Dad to help me take it to the Honda shop Then "pack your shit, we are moving again" ....it sucked being a military brat. Off we went to another state, I never got it back

Today was semi productive. Front wheel assembly installed. Headlight bucket wiring has begun. Painting of various parts along with more parts ordered. Wiring the aftermarket engine will be fun. Still looking up how to.

I hada solid afternoon of tinkering on the bike. Mostly dedicated to wiring. Making the Chinese motor match up to the original wiring harness is hard. I bought a few parts to make it easier, and I think I got it, but it was still not just plug n play. I need to move the coil inside the frame but I don't know how unless I unbolt the motor. Which I may have to. Remembering how the handle bar controls went together took me a while. Lots of small springs, ball bearings and little room to work. That was fun. Throttle shows up today, along with a few other parts.

I got the throttle installed yesterday. I also ordered a new clutch cable as the old one was not going to work. The issue am having is I am at its max adjustment and the cable is still binding. I need to figure out how to change the bracket the cable attaches to, I only need a 1/2" or so.. I also need to order a carb for it. The one that came with the motor will not work as it hits the frame. There is a few wires in the headlight housing that I need to figure out what they go to. The headlight has a white wire coming out of it but the harness coming from the handlebars has a white with a missing end and a white with a small yellow band on it. |
