I've been feeding my 70lb male Labrador Retriever homemade dog food for about a month with no issues. Until the past 7-10 days when he's developed a bad case of scratching/itching. He will scratch in random locations then stop. Then scratch 10-15 minutes later. Here's my homemade recipe: It's 75% animal protein (is usually chicken or ground turkey, recently added venison and moose), 25% carbs (rice and/or sweet potatoes), 25% vegetables (organic mixed veggies, frozen from Costco that has peas, corn, carrots and green beans). The change to his diet which is what I'm assuming has started his itching has been one of the following: Ground eggshells, coconut oil, krill oil capsule, a powdered form supplement from "Dr. Jones". And a morning fried egg would be added to the mix. I've removed all of the items in the last line above and see if the scratching resolves. I can't imagine it would be the venison as all of the research I've read says that venison is actually a great meat for dogs who have allergies. Any thoughts or recommendations? |

Have had numerous labs. Past and current dags would get yeast infections in ears. Vet said beef usual cause- we eliminated beef (including Buffalo and venison, bully sticks, etc). and ears are fine. Vet also said some dogs allergic to chicken and some dogs will chew on paws, etc from reaction. Love our vet- holistic but also western medicine. We also asked him about homemade diets- he gave us a couple handouts. After reading, we're sticking with quality commercial food. Glad you're making the effort. (Meeting balance protein, and minerals, etc too much for us) |

Our GSD had similar issues. We had him tested for allergens. Turns out he's sensitive, in this order, to: eggs salmon, soy, oats, wheat potatoes So, it's been a matter of reading ingredient lists and finding a dog food without any of that. Most commercial dog foods have soy. Puppers is also on antibiotics and antifungal shampoo, and his issues are clearing up slowly. He also learned to weaponize his cone of shame; as a big GSD he had a big cone and he could sweep a low table clean just by turning his head. We got him some surgery recovery suits instead and those work a lot better. |
