Hello all, I have a buddy who just got a "great deal" on Geo Tracker buggy with 85 Toyota 8" axles. The front was blown out bad and he asked me to help him rebuild it. I'm a jeep guy, so I have to know how to wrench, but it's been a learning curve. The birfield was BLOWN OUT in the passenger side. BAD. The gear oil was gray which I assume means water got in maybe. After a couple of weeks of waiting for Longfield's and a six-shooter knuckle kit I got it all together. But I had to really tug/push the driver side axle to get it to slide into the carrier. I didn't say anything at the time because I didn't want to demoralize him further, but after driving it around the shop it's blowing oil out of the driver side knuckle bad. It's pretty obvious to me that the axle is not sitting in the center of the axle seal and it's leaking out. Per some online recomendations, we got some Marlin Crawler seals that should do better with an axle that has a mild bend. I would like to have a plan to bend the thing back a tad if possible. I googled this and found nothing. Lots about bending back Dana/Ford/Chevy axles but very little about Toyota. I was going to have him drive onto an I-beam scrap, hook some chains over the diff and passenger axle, shine a construction laser onto the axle, then start lifting the outer passenger with my 20 ton jack. What could possibly go wrong?  (Pic placeholder.)

I’ve seen axles get straightened with I-beams, chains, and bottle jacks, but have never done it personally. You might try asking this over at irate4x4.com (not pirate) too, probably will get a lot more experienced eyes on it there. |

Not related to a toyota axle. I had a 14bff rear axle. I took to a guy to rebuild and install a locker. Turns out the housing is just bent enough to were he can barely get the shafts out. I get a proposal, either he can try to straighten it (~$1000) and no guarantee it'll be straight after working on it. Or find a straight one. I went with the "find a straight one" option. To save any potential head aches. |
