I am putting a chair together but I glued on piece backwards. The chair uses mortise and tenon joinery. The glue has been setting for about an hour. How can I take this apart with destroying it? ETA: I able to get it apart after rocking the piece back and forth like 50 times. I cleaned off the uncured glue, put new glue on, and put the whole assembly back together correctly. |

If you get into that trouble again, as long as it’s not epoxy, and the glue joint sets , you might get the glue softened with some heat and moisture Chairs and musical instruments used to use hide glue, which is pretty easily taken apart with some heat. Not like heat gun char the wood hot. Hair dryer kind of hot |

You will likely get some breakage on one piece or the other; the way you pry the pieces apart can affect which side of the glue joint is more likely to remain intact. I would only ever expect to be able to salvage one side of a glue joint if it had to be broken, if that. Realistically, if I find something is off after the glue has set, I expect it to be a complete loss. |
