I read Alf Blackburn's Wartime Memoirs and he mentions the water rationing of 1 pint a day. It wasn't any better for the DAK and the Italians. Does anyone know if the men who served there in any army had kidney stones later in life? I'd imagine it would be much higher for them since they couldn't hydrate as frequently. |

Many years ago my landlord in Germany was in the desert during the war. He would always walk around with an old thermos in his hand. I asked him if he really enjoyed coffee, I could go pick him up some at the BX. He replied, not coffee, water, he never ever went anywhere without it. He then told me about his time in the Afrika Korp unser Rommel and how they were absolutely exhausted with no food nor water or munitions. He had no use for munitions now, food he was ok with going without for a bit, but water.... water he carried everywhere. He had that thousand yard stare that i could tell he was thinking back about nearly dying of thirst many times. |

I imagine much silicosis of the lungs would be found from breathing large amounts of fine desert sand particles & dust. Dust & sand is everywhere and on everything in the Western Desert. |

I had a great-uncle who served in North Africa with the 1st ID. He didn't talk much about the war. He went from Africa to different European theaters. From the invasion of Algeria on 11-8-42, to the death of Hitler on 4-30-45 were 904 days. The Big Red 1 spent 443 of those days in combat. Yes, my uncle had health problems later in life. Where they from Africa specifically? Hard to say. I do remember him teaching me to hook up a canteen onto use web gear when I was kid. When I was 15 he took me aside and said, "Take care of your men and they will take care of you." I had no idea what he was talking about. He had terminal cancer and passed six weeks later. The significance of both those lessons stuck me later in life. |
