Now, it wasn’t exactly “coast-to-coast” but in early 1993 my brother and I took my Nissan Sentra from Aiken SC to Banning CA without shutting the engine off. We left Aiken early Sunday morning, as the sun was just coming up. We arrived in Banning around 11 pm Monday. So “technically” the next day.

There are newer models with the 6L LS that could easily cruise at 100 if you did a few mods. Laser jammers would be completely pointless in something that large though lol. |

Meaning, every time they have to slow down because they hit traffic, construction, or LE they can't avoid, they have to then go considerably faster somewhere else to make up that time. The only advantage a modified box truck would have would be eliminating fuel stoppages completely, but the cons outweigh that advantage significantly. The cars generally used for this are more or less designed for this type of driving from the factory. They're either Autobahn bombers from German luxury manufacturers or US/JDM cars designed to compete with those cars. The acceleration, top speed, braking, stability, comfort, and aerodynamics all matter. The Audi S6 that currently holds the Cannonball record shipped from the factory with a speed limiter of 155 mph. Disable that, and the car can do 175-180 mph. Do some mods, and the car can break 190 mph. To maintain that 100+ MPH average, teams have to hit some of these speeds to make up for traffic jams, construction zones, or truckers doing the 10 mile elephant race. And even at "only" 100 mph, the difference is still massive. The Autobahn bomber is completely stable, composed, and quiet. The crew can chat and pass around snacks like they're commuting to a desk job at Initech. A box truck at 100 mph? If it can even hit that speed, that's an event. Stiff suspension, solid rear axle chattering around the seams of the pavement, wind and aerodynamic drag blowing the truck everywhere, 100dB+ of noise in the cab... That would be fun for all of 10 minutes. Doing that for an hour would be exhausting. Doing that for 20+ hours? Death. Ain't no way. |
