![]() GenX is Getting Old: Here's What Nobody Tells You About It 100% worth the watch. They told us we’d get gray hair. Maybe some wrinkles. Maybe we’d slow down a little. That was adorable. What they forgot to mention was that one day you’d wake up and your body would start acting like a house built in 1974. Still standing. Mostly functional. But there are noises. There are leaks. Some things only work if you jiggle them first. And apparently the warranty expired years ago. In this episode of All Things Gen X, we’re talking about the truth about getting older. The eyesight changes. The hearing changes. The sleep changes. The muscle loss. The metabolism shift. The mystery injuries. The slower recovery. The brain buffering. The skin, the hair, the hormones, the joints, and the deeply disrespectful moment when you injure yourself doing absolutely nothing. And the weirdest part? Inside your head, you still basically feel like the same person you were at 28. Meanwhile your knees are filing paperwork with Human Resources. We’ll get into: Why your vision starts betraying you Why recovery takes longer Why strength and muscle become more important with age Why sleep changes Why your brain can feel slower even when you’re still sharp Why hearing loss sneaks up on you Why menopause and hormonal changes can completely rearrange the experience And why aging well is less about trying to look young and more about trying to stay capable |

the oldest gen-xer will start collecting social security in about 130 days or so. And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again Sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death |

and the deeply disrespectful moment when you injure yourself doing absolutely nothing. Class of 1987 here. I literally laughed out loud when I read that.

The saddest part: when you realize there’s something you can no longer risk doing. Like watching a bunch of youngsters that you do your damnedest to keep up with, jump off a wall…wearing body armor/full kit. |
I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one.
No rules today, sport…just orders.

I am certainly less physically resilient now than I am in my late 50's. Was replacing siding yesterday and lost my footing getting off the scaffold platform while holding a board. Only fell about 5 feet but landed badly on my side and one hand. Nothing broken but my side and wrist are sore as hell. In my 20's I would have just bounced back up and kept working. Now I will be on 600 mg of ibuprofen every 8 hrs for the next 3 days to just stay minimally functional. |
It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt.

I love a good double entendre.

I'm turning 60 this year. My motorcycle has more HP than either of the two 1970's 6 cylinder cars I drove as a teen. |
Strive to carry the handgun you would want anywhere, everywhere; forget that good area bullcrap.

Ages 40-80. The real athletes were discovered early and training/ competing has left them with injuries later in life. See with former military guys too. I, on the other hand hand, was a mediocre athlete at best, was never selected to advance. Still never gave up and never really hurt myself. Result is that at 56 I have passed up the jocks who peaked early due to injury. |

I'll stand there, looking at something, pondering doing something. My mind is telling me, "Dude. Is it really that important to you? Do you want to invite pain into your life? Walk away."

| You know when you have reached the top of the hill and started down it when you start asking yourself ''how can this hurt me if I go ahead and do it?" A younger you..............that wouldn't have even crossed your mind. |

| I’m 52 and can’t really complain. Always was physically active and always ate a good diet. Even after doing blue collar shit all my life starting with farm work at 12 I don’t really have aches and pains. I do have to use readers to read small print now and my hairline has receded lol. |

A younger you..............that wouldn't have even crossed your mind. Yep and sometimes it's little things too. I was trying to reinstall a 240 dryer plug into an outlet and couldn't reach it enough to push it in all the way so I gave it a little kick with the tip of my boot. [which worked perfectly fine] And it totally trashed my knee for about three weeks because I had somehow over extended it........... ![]() Boss had to go out to the house, do a report, and I told him to try and reach the outlet and then reinstall the plug with his hand and the light clicked on. Hell, I still went to work everyday so I have no clue what the company bitched about any ways. Yeah I was slower going up and down the steps and walking but I still got as much done in a day. |
