| Does anyone have experience switching from GI irons to PD irons and how did it go? I have G430s but really like the look of the i530s and p790s. |
I think a demo is the only way to know what will blow your skirt up.  I really hate improvement irons because the faces have "hot spots" that really sail the ball further. I like old style/ player irons because it is just always a consistent number. The tradeoff is you have to do your part because there is no far-give-ness lol. YMMV of course. Only way to know is try them all. |

I just switched from Callaway Rogue ST Max Oversize to Takomo 101T's. I don't notice much difference in forgiveness but there's a big difference in distance because the Rogues were a full club stronger on loft, in other words my Rogue 5 iron had the same loft as the Takomo 4 iron, the 6 had the same as the Takomo 5, and the same pattern follows throughout the set. It was great for making me feel like I could crush a ball but now reality has set in and I've had to adjust. I get a much higher flight path with the Takomos and that's been nice. |

I went to Top Golf with some family who flew in for a wedding, and hit some balls with their 'Sure Thing' driver. 20° of loft Giant (illegal) trampoline effect clubface It really was like cheating. 30 years ago I could hit 240 yard drives with a 10° driver. But I'm 66 years old, with less strength and flexibility, and need all the help I can get now. I'd buy one tomorrow if it was available. Point is, play with the clubs you get the best results with. To know what those clubs are, you need to demo them. Remember too that the shaft (flex, bend profile, tip stiffness) is easily as important as the clubhead itself. |
It's never a 'big deal' until you have to pull the trigger.

I went from Tour Edge HL4 and Maltby KE4 Max shovels to Paradym irons a few years ago. They feel amazing and are reasonably forgiving. I now "get" why some players don't like looking down at big, clunky irons. That said, I'm building a set of Maltby STi2's bent 1* weak that will be at least 3* weaker per club than my Paradym irons. I'm hitting the Paradym's we'll, but need more height and spin than I'm getting with jacked lofted player's distance irons. |

Last year went from TM M2s to PXG 0311P irons. That’s the mid range between PXG’s GI and Player’s Irons. Definitely a different feel, and I’m a massive fan of the PXGs. I did swing a few different brands before purchasing them, and wanted a smaller face than the M2s. I can’t say the PXG are any less forgiving than the older TMs, but my distance is slightly more consistent. Biggest thing is get fitted, and see what works best for you. Went to a local golf shop initially that’s brand agnostic and that gave me a good baseline to see what i really wanted. FWIW, I’m a 16 handicap. |

My experience, I switched from GI irons fairly early because I hated the look of them. I probably wasn't ready for them just based on skill alone, however, something interesting happened. Since I knew the irons were less forgiving and therefore I had to be better, I ended up hitting my irons way better. I was more focused and disciplined when hitting them. It honestly did wonders for my game. So I would say switch and reap the benefits. |

This is only my opinion. All I value from a set of irons is consistent distance. That's it. All good strikers of the golf ball still miss left and right, but they hit it the right distance. High, low, whatever. If they need it to carry 147, it carries 147. Who cares what number is stamped on the bottom. If you hit 6I from 205 that's great. But don't hit it 192 one shot and 210 the next. So whatever type of iron gives you the smallest dispersion go with it. With the modern fitting process you can go to a place and try them all out with different shaft flexes and weights. |

I’ve been gaming the T200s for 2 years now. They still give amazing forgiveness and I still get away with some abysmal contact shots not being too far off line for dispersion and distance. Sometimes you’ll get a bit of a hot ball that can go longer than you expect which I’m getting more and more now that my ball striking is improving significantly. Great irons. I’ve debated going for a bit less forgiving iron or just having my lofts bent weak 2 degrees. We play at 4500-5000ft and I just don’t need a 165y 9i. I’d rather have a 150 club and get more height and spin for control. Or I could just move up to a T100/T150 combo set for the best of both worlds. |

I am trying some irons with weaker lofts after hitting low spin bombs with my Paradym irons. Less distance but more height and spin has been good so far. |

P790's are game Improvement. P770 are the Players distance. I prefer the players side of Players distance. Currently have Titleist T150's, a set of ZX7s in the travel/backup bag and my grail set of P760s. I just can't hit a club with wider soles. Been through P790's, P770's, ZX5, Cobra Forged Tec, and a older set of Mizuno 919 Forged. My swing just doesn't jive with GI clubs. |

had fitting today. pretty thorough and i was wore out afterwards. came down to Ping I530s and Mizuno JPX 925 forged. fitted with an 85 gram graphite shaft. wound up going with the Pings in retro spec, +1.5", orange dot which I never would have guessed (i am 6'4"). The Mizuno felt amazing and soft on a flushed shot but my misses were worse with it. i would have gone with the mizuno if the dispersion chart was like the pings. the ping was more of a springy feel and was much more forgiving and my front to back dispersion was very narrow compared to the mizuno, and with about 10 yards more distance than i currently get. I had some worries going in about whether i could even hit a club that is not a designated GI shovel club well because i've never had the chance to try but it turned out to be a complete non issue. 3rd place was Callaway Apex Ti Fusion which is a really good looking iron and had good results but i preferred the feel of the other two. other clubs i tried were Callaway Apex Ai200, the new P790s (good looking clubs also), some kind of Miura, Srixon ZXi4. may have tried the zxi5 also but can't remember for sure. i did not ask for anything specific from the fitter except that i wanted something sleeker than current with better results and with a forged aspect but only if my swing could pull it off. he just started handing me clubs and away we went. excited to get these delivered. |
