Accurization package for the M14s coming soon…? I know that’s not what they’re showing in that pic. Wonder if some of the CMP M14s are kind of chewed up and it’s an upgrade for those. 🤷♂️ pure specious speculation here. |

I talked my uncle into building one of the H&R kits out on an m25 receiver probably 15 years ago and is the only reason I know anything about them. His gun turned out great but I'm not sure he ever actually shot it. |

In talking with my gunsmith friend he said Springfield got their start in M14's building them on parts kits from those days. He quite hated SA because when they tried making the guns from scratch they did a horrible job. He spoke of barrels with ringed chambers, or chambers cut too short that they couldn't possibly have ever test fired. It did give him a good bit of work fixing their fuck ups from customers who didn't want their crappy parts put back on the guns. He'd replace barrels with USGI and was the reason he had so many parts kits. |

If that barrel is removed, the shoulder can in theory be “rolled” back to be properly retorqued on another install-sssuming ME and TE are within spec. |

I remember that from reading some manual and remembered the crushed-threads part but not any of the rest.

Think about how much personal income you’d have to burn through in ammo and barrel changes (barrels+labor) to wear out an investment cast receiver. I want a couple of CMP M14s (God willing), but only because they’re USGI with all that implies. A SA, Inc M1A (ETA: or Fulton rifle for that matter) with USGI parts isn’t a bad rifle at all. |

Many of the 100k guns left in inventory likely date back to the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. The round count on a few of them has to be pretty high at this point. |

I still shoot my Springfield National Match rifle. It's built up with USGI Winchester parts. Glenn Nelson built them right back in the 1980's! His bedding job is phenomenal! It's great for bench shooting, a bit heavy for anything else! I pick up my ColtA4 after shooting the M1A It feels super light! Great fun hitting steel ! |

Some guys carried them to war once (and probably hated them) so there is some cloner somewhere who has to have one so here we are. If it makes them happy, have at it. I don't get the appeal though. |

More importantly, lots of Millennials used M14s in Sage chassis on Call of Duty growing up, think they're cool, and want to buy one. |

Whatever receivers are left have been through depot rebuild (probably more than once), which means they were gauged for serviceability before being accepted for rebuild. Production ended in 1963 (1.3 million). The M16A1 was standardized in 1968. The M14 didn’t see as much use in Vietnam as the M16 by any stretch of the imagination. MCRD SD & MCRD PISC and ITR E & W stopped using the M14 as a training rifle in 1974 (for perspective). I’m sure the Army probably stopped using the M14 for initial training around that time too, if not sooner. The number of rifles allocated for training was probably tens of thousands at most? From the early to mid 1970s, M14s sat largely in storage at Anniston until they became limited issue for GWOT. I would guess-even in a worse case scenario-that the round count on the majority of remaining rifles would be far, far less than half the service life of the receiver. In fact, I would venture to guess around 50,000-60,000 rds but that’s just me doing simple goat math. |

Fulton built an M14 for me on a stripped Chicom receiver long ago. While I rarely shoot it (AR-10 pattern has vastly superior ergonomics, accuracy, ease of maintenance, parts availability, optics mounting etc.) there is just something about the M14… and they do feel good in the hand… comparatively trim. I’ll watch because I’m curious, however I plan to put in for a couple CMP rifles when they become available. |
