I found out that the owner of Fruita Wood supply retired. I have always bought all my wood for smoking from them and it was great quality. I used to live close to their store and would pick up all my wood for smoking in person. He would sometimes have oddball woods at the store in limited quantity. Looks like they might have sold/rebranded and is now fruita wood chunks, we will see if they are any good. Where does everyone else get their wood for smoking? |
| I'm in Iowa, and I have a local guy who cuts wood. He does a good job of rotating the wood to ensure it's seasoned before I pick it up. I use all oak (bur oak, white oak, red oak), local to Iowa. I also have a moisture tester, just in case I want to check the moisture level myself. i try to stay 15% or less in the wood i use. |

I have access to a 160 acre farm with most of the 'standard' smoking woods. Hickorys, oaks, maples, cherry. However, I see 'free' wood on craigslist and marketplace all the time. Sometimes it's hard to identify the species, but I can usually figure it out. Anything that's close to me I usually go grab. If I can figure out what it is and it's good smoking wood, I use it for that. If not, I use it for firewood. Doesn't take much if you're using chunks though...a couple firewood pieces worth will supply a lot of smoking chunks. |
