Does anyone know anything about fuel tank repairs when the tank in question has been relined previously? The liner is flaking off in my fuel tank and the shop refused to work on it. How can I fix that or is my only option to get new tanks made? PFA Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File ![]() ![]() |

The way we deal with rusted diesel fuel tanks at work is to cut an access opening, weld on backup strips, then clean out the tank. Wire wheels or blasting. We never treat them as it always fails and causes bigger problems. The backup strips make it easy to weld the plate back on without any splatter getting inside and to have full penitration. |

For smaller tanks filling them up with acetone and letting them sit until the lining softens up, then hitting it with a pressure washer usually takes care of it, sometimes you need to use the nuts/gravel and shake it up routine to get the lining to come off. Acetone would be a littttttle bit expensive to fill up that tank. Since it is a simple tank, and it's painted, I would suggest a partial deconstruction of the tank. Gouge off one end of the tank, do the cleaning with a scraper, wire brush and some acetone. I would use Rustblast to clean up the rust, and treat the steel. Personally I would rather have raw tanks, unless you have pinholes. |
| My fellow Cat guys...966XE transmission synchronizer sensors #1 and #2...have you had to keep throwing sensors, hoping a good one sticks? This one has been through about 7 or 8 sets. DSN is sending me ones "that will fix the issue". We'll see. |

I'm an aftermarket rep for an Ag equipment manufacturer - it's an understatement to say that I am very busy right now. One of my dealers calls me asking for assistance in trying to figure out a piece of new equipment as they've 'tried everything'. I reluctantly drive the 4.5hrs to the customer site since I am far more productive behind a desk during harvest. Normally, there are other channels for technical support, but this was a 'be the punching bag' type visit. Verified the customer complaint, verified a couple amp readings, made an adjustment and fixed the problem in less than 15min. This adjustment is also in the operators manual that both the customer and dealer claimed they tried multiple times... oh well. At least I was able to eat at one of my favorite restaurants during the trip. |

Gee, thanks. ![]() We're not sure if it's related or not, but Cat came out and installed an AI-powered collision/person detection system on it. They never had any issues with the sensors, but once that system was put on, it's been eating sensors. I haven't seen any of the old sensors, but my understanding is that there's no physical damage and they're not on CAN/CDL, so I don't think the detection system is sending out corrupt messages and screwing them up. The tech who replaced most of the sensors thinks something in the trans is out of spec/loose, but I don't see how it would screw them up if they're not being physically damaged.
