When I was in college, I got my private pilot’s license. Life ended up happening, and I stopped flying 15 years ago. Recently, I decided that I really should get current again. When I was growing up, flying with my dad was a big part of my childhood. I really want to do that with my kids and they’re getting big fast. A lot of preparation went into this (took an online ground school course). Last week I did a ground session with an instructor and knocked out that portion of a flight review. Last night I flew with the instructor. 15 years is a long time and I’m definitely a little rusty, but it went way better than I expected. Even landed the first time with minimal assistance from the instructor and greased the second landing with no assistance whatsoever. My instructor stated he was surprised I did so well given how long it’s been. Doing a cross country flight next week. Haven’t been able to stop smiling since last night. |

I'd love to get current again myself. I fly a lot of flight sims, so I can kind of keep up with knowing the instruments and general stuff, but it's not the same of course. But man, like everything, it is so expensive now! When I was flying regularly in The Nineties, the Cherokee 140 was $35 bucks an hour, wet! Now, I'm not seeing anything less than $150, and most of them also you have to pay for the fuel, so add another 50-60 bucks there. Sheesh. I mean, some of them are still the same old planes from the 70s that I flew back then! (Although, have to admit, I am kind of curious to fly some of these new brands like Cirrus and Diamond, and maybe one with the 'glass' cockpit.) Maybe when I retire... |
