I've been an off and on pipe smoker for a long time but somehow only learned about Falcon pipes recently. They're made in England and notable because the bowl unscrews from the aluminum shank. The part where the bowl screws onto is a smaller bowl underneath the main bowl. The idea behind this design is that it catches excess moisture and cools the smoke before it gets to your mouth. I picked up this Falcon from eBay and got it today. It was used but cleaned by the seller. Upon receipt I cleaned it again with some vodka. I took it out front with some Lance BCA (in the Partagas tin) to try it out. Attached File Just water in the tin cup, BTW. Attached File I am really impressed with it. It smokes cool and when I was done and let it cool, I unscrewed the bowl to find a good amount of moisture and goo that had collected there. After I wiped it out with a paper towel: Attached File This just became one of my favorite pipes. A cool thing is that you can find replacement shanks and bowls on eBay so you can mix and match. I am tempted to get a meerschaum bowl for it. |

| So something I didn't know until it was mentioned to me elsewhere is that Falcon sells "dry rings" to go in the bottom chamber, to absorb moisture and goo. They look like a loop made from a pipe cleaner and are made from 100% cotton. I don't have any but I took a pipe cleaner, wrapped it around a fat pen, and cut it into 3 pieces. I used one as a dry ring for a bowl tonight and it definitely absorbed some goo. The tobacco I smoked was a little dry so there wan't any excess moisture to speak of, so I'll have to try it with something else. |
