Everytime I go into Lowes I keep eyeballing the Pit Boss Vertical smokers.

They also carry offset pellet grills but I want a smoker. I know I can technically smoke on the gril but I have been smoking on a Weber Kettle, Smoky Mountain (awersome smoker IMHO, held temps like a champ) and a cheap Rivergrille offset for  many years. I dont want to move stuff around due to occasional temp differences in the cooking area and such and I like the compactness of the vertical.  So I want to go somethign completely new to me. Vertical and pellet.

Now I hear you get less smoke flavor with a vertical and its basically just an oven with a tad bit of smoke? Or is that BS. Hoping BS

Pit Boss any decent? Any particular model to avoid?

I have put in enough time smoking via snake method in the kettle and with a traditional charcoal offset. I want to spend more time playing cornhole, fishing outback or BSing with friends than babysitting the smoker (not that it was that much of a big deal)

8 month update.

Works like a champ still. Smoke  tube is a requirement for some things. EAsy enough.

As long as the pellets arent super long it never jams and holds steady all day.

Can’t say specifically about that model, but all of the pellet smokers are ovens that add a little smoke ….

I’m not knocking them, my bride uses the shit out of ours.  But it’s not like using a stick burner where you’re getting a good deep ring, and heavy bark .

They are very convenient.  Newer ones can be monitored by Bluetooth.  Pretty crazy to think about it

I Have This One

I'm on my second Pit Boss. I had the entry level, basic one that I used for over 6 years.
Don't believe the hype about "No Smoke Ring" or "No Bark"
That is mostly in the prep of the meat going on the smoker.
From the simplest thing to smoke (Pork Butt) to the most tender and delicious Brisket, I've smoked everything to perfection on mine.
These things are set and forget easy, but you still need to check on them from time to time.

My pit boss isn't vertical, but I've been very happy with it and it makes great meat.

OP might wish to consider a gravity-fed charcoal grill/smoker.

Better flavor than pellets.  Can use briquettes, lump, and wood chunks.

I have the pro series 4 I got at Lowes. Love it and works great. Just make to tighten all screw before hand including castors.

Have a pit boss 820d and temperature control is a problem with pretty wild swings.  Haven’t had time to troubleshoot it.

True being oven that add smoke.  TEechnically all smokers are ovens but not all over are smokers.

Some of the best BBW I ever had didnt have a ring and some of trhe worst had the brightest red rings I quit worrying about ring a long time ago. As far as bark? Heavy is always good

I have used a WSM and offset for many years. Even a kettle.   I gave away my WSM and now just gave aya the offset. (Keeping the Kettle of course) and finally grabbed the vertical pellet.

Went in Lowes ot get a tube of silicone and they had them on clearance for $440 . They were 599 last week. SO I broke down and grabbed it.

Sure it will be a leanring    curve as going from kettly, to wsm, to offset had curves. But after putting in so much time wiht them I am confident I can overcome the curve with this.

The older I get the more I appreciate time. Instead of slaving by the firebox every 30 minutes, often in the rain or boiling heat, I can now fish out back and not babysit so much. I canput away a few more beers, actually take the time to catch a  fish or even just sit in the gazeebo and chil with the rest of the gang.

Or it ends up being a massive piece of crap and I hate it lol. Willing to take the chance.

I did look at one but wanted to try something entirely new to me. I have seen charcoal pellets and some folks say they mix them in with the wood pellets to good effect.
