So some mad lads have gone all the way back to the original 1999 EQ, made a ton of QoL changes, and are currently in closed beta to release it to retail. I played the shit out of the OG EQ from beta 1 on, so I'm all over this. Possible guild? |

I like how they state on their website, Kerran, is a playable class. Then you look at their intro trailer and it clearly shows Vah Shir. No self respecting EQ player/developer would ever make that mistake. I wonder if it's going to be retail, as you stated, or just another EMU? |

One of my favorite gaming moments was playing early with two buddies. We had grouped up to chat, but went out separately to and I went to grind some lions. I’d shoot a lion to pull it and the fucker would run away. WTF. Alright, let’s try this other lion. Where the hell is that one going? This is dumb. Then one of my buddies says “what’s with all these lions?” It then dawned on me that he had buffed me before we split up. I started chuckling. And pulled another. Away it ran. Wait a little and do another. My buddy starts swearing. After a short bit, I’m in tears, and in fact I’m laughing so hard I’m crying right now remembering it. Finally, I just went and shot as many as I could in rapid succession. And then ran in the opposite direction, so they’d de-aggro before getting to me. I think they got me anyway cuz I seem to recall it was really hard to break aggro. Overall, I found EverQuest to be rather slow paced and tedious compared to WoW, and people took it way too seriously. I had a lot more fun with WoW. |

I still fire up EQ2 every few years and run around a bit. (Even got my wife and 10 year old daughter into it a bit. I have a 130+ Necro, so I mostly escort them around. Even in the Mentor mode, i'll one shot entire groups if they mess up their pulls.) About a decade ago I fired up EQ and my character was still standing where I left her in like 2003. I was a bit disappointed that the graphics had been improved, so it didn't have that '99 blocky look to it. So yeah, I might check out an official EQ99 project. |

The original version definitely was.. it was grindy as hell and leveling was a bitch. I’ve been watching a few of the beta streamers and it looks like leveling is as fast as WoW and there are a ton of really cool QoL additions and AA buffs. It appeals to me to have a game that plays somewhat new, but I also have a lot of knowledge about. |

Oh the MMORPG memories. Instead of EQ, though, I played Asheron’s Call. To the point it was a problem early in my marriage. My weirdest memory involved a GameStop in a mall when AC2 was being released. By this point I had broken free of the games and had my first son in a stroller with me. The guy behind the counter asked me if I had played AC1 and I told him I had been a monarch on the Thistedown server. When he asked my character name and I told him, he got really quiet, and then started talking in awe how I had been his monarch, had given him his first real set of good gear, and had showed up to save him from dying when he got in way over his head as a noob. I told him that was cool, and started to leave, and he followed me and kept geeking out about stuff that had happened in the game. Left the store completely unattended to follow me around the mall. To the point it started to freak out my son. Closest I’ve ever come to feeling celebrity status. Fun fact, it’s also how I got my username on all these forums. It was my AC character. My first character was Triolus, but I made some build flaws, so I created Trio, and the rest is completely irrelevant internet history |

Started back into EQ2 back in November. I tire quickly and now just log on to do some daily quests. Would be interesting to jump into Legends and start with everyone at square one. Played a Pally in EQ and a Pally and Fury back in the day in EQ2. Now I play a SK with Death’s Devotion Eveled to Ancient and a Celestial Merc and I can solo well enough. The problem is to really enjoy the content you have to have the time. I miss raiding but damn that becomes a second job if you’re in a good raid guild. I’m 54 not 34 anymore so I just don’t have time to run the game the way it should. I signed up for Beta, should check my email to see if there is an invite. |

On WoW we needed a healer and we were horde so I made an undead priest. Priest+coming back from dead+appreciation for Kevin Smith movies and BuddyChryst became my name. |

I wasn't down since Day 1, but I did start just after RoK was released, so only 1 year behind and IMO this is still very early EQ. I logged in a year or two ago for the first time since 2008. My established characters were still there but I lost all my guys that were sub-level 10. They did a purge years ago and I lost my guys, most important of all my lvl 1 bazaar Trader Gnomemart. I had like maybe $50M plat on him plus other rare items. At that time that amount of money was more than many entire guilds held. I had a few million on my mains but when I logged in the economy was super inflated and people were spamming /wtb and /wts shit for several million for normal stuff, so a few million 20 years later ain't shit I made so much money as one of the couple people on the server who could combine a Quad A (Ambleshift's Amazing Automated Amalgamator) which made some pretty uber augments that guilds wanted for their star members. I think I was selling these for like $500K plat at the time. It was the most complex Tinkering recipe ever conceived at that point. I didn't have any super crazy items like a BFG or special GM event items, but stuff like Amulet of Necropotence, Fungi Staff, Manastone. IIRC those all got nerfed at some point but I had the pre-nerf ones and now their data is gone forever after they deleted Gnomemart. To this day I mentally judge games against EQ. NOTHING will ever create that sense of wonder and mystery as it did the 1st time in 2000. I'd like to try this new server but I feel it's been done before. Too many know just what to do there's no mystery. It will progress in like 1 day. |
