So I'm having issues learning the first book. This type of memorization is so foreign to me since nothing is written. Any advice or tips and tricks.

The language usually has a rhythm to it and pairs or in groups of three. It helps if your mentor really know the work and can take it slow with you rather than being on fast forward because that is the way he remembers it.

Also the questions and answers are like telling a story - you should already know the plot - this is just the detail.

It takes time.  Keep at it, and eventually it will come together.  The second and third are much easier once you learn the first.

As there seem to be variations to the ritual, from what I have seen, and I have never spoken to someone from a Florida Lodge, all I can say is keep at it.

Also were you given a mentor from your lodge to help you study, or are you just attending other EA degrees as you say nothing is written? Not even a cypher?

I know places do things differently and I'm not particularity fond of how relaxed Arizona has gotten,(perhaps due to decline in numbers) It could have been easier for me, but I made sure that I did all three full catechisms for my proficiency.

I would speak with your mentor, if you don't have one or even if you do and have asked them, talk to the Master of the lodge for advice too.

Also I'm not saying there is an issue, but make sure that the place (Lodge) you attend is regular, many scams have come lately, but then again most of them want your money, and would probably make it easier on you. :)

I'm not familiar with Florida's work.

You said book.  Ciphered?  Do you have a coach/mentor?

Keep this in mind.
Get over this hump and the others are not as demanding.
Do NOT give up.
