As a drill press it will be much better than any old craftsman drill press. I have a 80s craftsman and it's really setup for wood working. I can make a custom step down pulley to get the rpms down to a slower, steel friendly, speed. As a mill, I don't think they have the spindle bearings to support such work. If it has the torque then you can use center cutting end mills to cut bigger holes and that's way better than drilling holes bigger than 3/8 inch. I just "drilled" some 3/4" holes Friday with endmills after I located and drilled the centers out with 1/8" drill bit. Worst case, the base, column, and work platform work well as a blacksmith vise stand or tool stand |
