... a few weeks ago. Before Chy-nah is arse-hoe, lemme 'splain. For the Tl;dr crowd, picked up a Donner for cheeep with great goodies attached to it.. Cruising local prawn shop, a place I have scored many good deals over the years. Saw a Donner, for $179 Tele semi solid, F-hole sunburst with yellow laquer neck. Nah, not a good deal. Closer inspection, what's this? Seymour Duncan P-Rails!Duncan P-Rails. Decent neck, straight no warp or fret burn. That's almost worth it for the pickups alone. And strange pickup rings.. I put it back, figured I didn't need another plank. Back in there a week later, after I determined the pickup rings were these deals Triple Shot Pickup Rings Of course, its gone. Oh well. I stop by this place once a week, it's in my travels not out of my way. Stop in the next week, just browsing around and I see a sales guy putting the same guitar on the counter. !!??!! I look at price tag $79.. no way.. pickups and rings still there. I begin to examine it, and some old guy(that's relative I guess, not a spring chicken here) starts ranting about something wrong with it, wired wrong, about blowed up muh amp, and how those pickups were $120 buck a piece. Guy must have brought it back and got his buck 79 back. I looked at sales guy and ask him, $79 right? Affirmative, I hand over 80 bucks and I''m on my way. One thing I noticed straight away after plopping it on the bench, was the pickups rings were barely 3/16 away from strings. Not good. As the pix below show, the pick guard functions as the pick up rings, as the cavity route is huuuge. The Duncan rings were wired to the pickups by a short ribbon cable that due to way installed led to a couple wires getting sheared off. Oh well I will repair later and put pickups in another guitar. Ok, the last hidden gem. Upon looking at the rest of the clammed wiring, I see this thing. Stellartone Tone Styler At this point I did look to see if any gold nuggets in there. Nope. Anyway, someone dropped over $500 in high end parts on this thing. I put a Gibson 490 out of a 2000 re-ish gold top in the bridge and a bridge p/u out of a '63 335. Yes that is correct on the '63. Have the neck p/u too, had the set for over 45 years. 7.6K a bit hotter than the neck 7.1K, figured that would be a better match. Sounds good, always like the low output PAF/ Patent sticker humbuckers. The Stellartone deal is really useful, if you are into that type of knob twisting. Thing plays great and sounds good! | Congrats on getting it for such a low price! My local gun store has a pawn shop right bytheir gun store, and I go in from time to time to see if there are any deals on the guitar wall, or any amps or cases to score. Usually some off brand guitars for cheap or a lot of Fender Squires, nothing great yet. |
