The question isn't, "Can I buy a van, go live by a river, use a gym membership to bathe, and eat cheap carbs, about to expire meat, and whatever is available at the food pantry to make ends meet on 30k?" The question is, "Is making $100k a year and not feeling high income a legitimate perspective?" Of course there are a lot of variables, and many of them have been covered in this thread, but when the response is, "Well, I don't take vacations, I drive a 20 year old beater, I bought a 50 year old fixer upper house and am doing the updates/maintenance myself, I've switched to chicken thighs instead of steak to reduce my food budget, etc... , and I'm making it work on less than 100k. These people need to suck it up and adjust their expectations." Then it's obvious people are missing the point of what being high income is. |

| Things wouldn't be so expensive if it wasn't for all the computers in everything nowadays. Everything's ten times more complicated than it needs to be and twenty times more fragile because of it. If they can land on the moon with technology from sixty years ago you don't need some supercomputer running your refrigerator, truck, or any other appliance you own. |

Its funny, I was just having this conversation with my family last night. If I could be king of the universe for five minutes, I would disappear the internet and all electronics and teach every human being to build shelter, hunt, and make fire. |

Conservatives and Leftists are often indistinguishable. Exist on meager wages, be happy you have some bread and beans, stop having kids, stop spending any money on those decadent capitalist frivolities, live in a small run down shack or apartment, use the communal shower at the local community center, drive a barely running old car or ride a bicycle and keep working while you wait to die, and please die cheaply. The glamorized self-sufficiency and self-sacrifice of managed decline of living standards sounds… almost indistinguishable from the Soviet Union. |

Username fits. ![]() The liberal side comes from an equity/equality POV. The conservative side (if done right) is typically more of a means to an end for middle class to become financially free. Cheap house, cheap rides, decent job, reach financial freedom by 40 or 50. |

It means little. Life feels very similar to when we were under 100, only now we pay more taxes I guess. I did the math on what my next 6 years look like maxing the corporate raise structure. In 6 years I'll have gained about 43 cents in buying power, if inflation stays around 2.5% I'm sure my bills will be cheaper in six years though. That's always how that works right guys? They get cheaper?

Cheap house, cheap rides, decent job, reach financial freedom by 40 or 50. That is the part that's being called into question with the direction of the country. If you work hard, make the right choices, and are a little lucky, you're supposed to be able to better your situation in life in the USA. Maybe you don't go from tap water and ramen to champaign and caviar, but it shouldn't be the case that every time you think you might be able to afford a couple of beers and a piece of filet, the economy comes along and puts it out of reach again. No one is going to frugal their way out of decades of the kind of inflation we've seen for the last few years. |
