My foster period has shown Gracie will not work out in a 1 person / 1 dog home where she needs to be crated when I am out of the house. She will cry, howl, and try to chew / get out of crate (three types of crates tried, including an Impact). She needs to be in a larger pack environment - at least 1 other dog. OTHER THAN THAT, she's been a very good pup. Details: -breed unknown, possible mal / shep mix, DNA test sent off and I'll provide it to whoever once I get results (~4weeks or so) -age est between 2 and 3 years -weight 62 lbs -female, did have puppies, has been spayed -had her at vet today and given a clean bill of health -no destructive or separation issues exhibited while staying with Jordan / Semper Fi for 7-8 weeks where there were multiple dogs (one issue in my care with chewing a bed leg but when caught in act and corrected has not recurred) -moderate to strong prey drive when on regular collar / harness and leash -VERY GOOD behavior when on a prong collar and leash, she learned within 3-4 corrections on the first walk and has been very good since; including passing squirrels, other dogs walking, other dogs barking -very food motivated but takes food and treats gently; still learning to leave food alone on counters/tables but progressing well -calm and well behaved for baths -good in car if in a harness with a lead tethered to headrest or seatbelt buckle (used in addition to a dog hammock in my experiences, did drives from 3-8 hours) -zero bathroom incidents in house, has been learning to do potty duties while on a leash (fenced yard would be preferrable IMO) -good, calm in house loose over night -does not destroy toys, does like to play with them, antlers have been a great aid in occupying energy -loves attention, belly and chest rubs, once warmed up enjoys laying near people on couch I have been able to take some time off work / do some work from home the last 4 weeks to limit her create time trying to get her to adapt but I have to return to full normal office hours next week starting the 6th. So unless another adopter is found by or close to then I will have to take her back to Semper Fi. Feel free to ask any follow-up questions etc.      |

Curious.. are you in a situation where crating is required? Reason I ask is years back I adopted a Newfoundland that was incredibly destructive when crated.. busted crate, torn up carpet, etc. Gave up on the idea and simply threw the crate away. I was expecting chaos when I got home… nothing. Turns out that the problem was the crating, not the dog. Had him for ten years after that and never had a single issue. That dog had no separation anxiety whatsoever, he just really hated being crated. We started out slow, left for 30 minutes, then 2 hours, etc. By week two, full work days were a non issue. |

I need a dog that can be crated for the times I travel with them to vacation or family/friends houses OR when I have a house/dog sitter. I've typically let my dogs loose in a semi controlled area of the house when I'm gone after establishing they are ok in that scenario, but always have the crate option. Since working on treats / kongs given in the crate, she will go into and hang out on her own for a bit - with no prompting - into the crates. As soon as I'm gone for ~30 minutes the crying/howling/trying to get out behavior starts. If i talk to her through my camera system, she immediately stops. I believe its separation / being left alone entirely (no other dogs, etc). |

I'm going to go ahead and guess that this dog would not be a good choice for a 70-some year old lady who's working towards a new hip? |

As noted, on a prong collar walking her is good, MINIMAL pull attempts easily corrected. But I'd still be a bit leery / cautious just because if anything REALLY got her worked up and she did pull, it could end poorly for the person you describe. |

She got it in her head that a K9 reject Maligator was the next dog she wanted. I've managed to talk her out of it for a while... If the mix on this one was mellower I might have shown it to her. Thanks. |

Please take a look at my response to your thread in General Discussion and consider starting a standalone thread there. For the reasons I outlined, you may have considerably better luck.
