In levels of fan speed:
If you just want to receive/listen then you want to get a good AM/FM/shortwave radio. C. Crane, Eton and Sangean all make decent stuff.
If you just want to listen/talk to people within your own group for a couple of miles, then you want GMRS radios - basically the modern day equivalent of a CB/walkie-talkie. Any well-known brand name will do. You can find them at Radio Shack, most sporting good stores, probably even Best Buy.
If you just want to listen/talk to people within a 16 mile radius, go get a Technician class ham radio license (it's not difficult), a 440/2meter transceiver (mobile or handheld) and a whip antenna.
If you want to listen/talk to people regionally, nationally or worldwide, go get a Technician ham radio license and a good mobile HF transceiver. Get to know it and antenna basics (you will want at least one permanent(big!) antenna and one portable) before the fan gets turned on. Kenwood, Icom and Yaesu will serve you well.
