Do I want a Porsche Macan or a Range Rover? (Page 1 of 3)

Buying a company truck so my personal can get traded in for something for driving around town. I don't care about cars. I've never bought myself a nice car. I don't care about engines and liters and torques and zero to sixties. Could not give less of a fuck. I just want comfy, low drama, and maybe some pizazz for the first time. Push pedal, go forward. Great. Works for me. Now I'm just paying for the logo and nice seats. My previous list was a Macan, a Defendor, or a Maserati Grecale. I took the Grecale out of the running because it seems like it may be drama getting serviced, at least more so than a more pedestrian choice. Also it seems to have some needless paddle shifters. It's a fking automatic in Suburbia. So I was between a Defendor or a Macan, and then I thought, shit, maybe a full blown Range Rover is the ticket, but that's going to tack on like, what, $40k over a Defender? Honestly, the Porsche is turning into the cheapest option. I planned on a $70-80k budget. Truck trade-in is only going to be like $16k, so I'm hovering around the $60k mark out of pocket. Any opinions on the Defender or a Range Rover or the Macan? |

Range/Land rovers are trash. Ya a few people get lucky and can get 100k out of them but that's rare. Talking about a $150k vehicle that depreciates $130k in 5 years. If it's a business vehicle, "maybe". Our neighbor owns a SVR Sport. Not a bad looking vehicle but he is driving a loaner more than his own car. I always give him shit about his 200k car in the shop. Porsche holds value much better and you'll find the mechanics at the Porsche dealerships know their shit much better than the Rover mechanics. |

Any opinions on the Defender or a Range Rover or the Macan? Land Rover Range Rovers are not the best on reliability. That being said, most Land Rover dealerships [local to you] will take care of you because you are buying a maintenance plan as part of the transaction. I looked at Defender, Bronco, Land Cruiser. Settled on the Land Cruiser. Loved the Defender. Dealer comes and gets the Defender and leaves you with a loaner for regular maintenance. Does the same thing within 150 miles of the dealership if the Defender would crap out, which they do. The Defender as it sits is looking dated compared to the LC and Bronco. It needs a tech refresh. After seeing an older Defender and Ineos Grenadier, I was less sold on what the Defender looks like. Another option is the Lexus G550 [I think]. Luxury interpretation of the Land Cruiser. I would do another LC [or 4R or Tacoma]. I would consider Bronco and Defender with a refresh in the future. I'd consider the Ineos if they get the dealer and parts network more robust for the USA |

| 2027 Macans are supposed to be electric only but you can probably get a good deal on a low mileage CPO gas one. Porsche has a good 2 year CPO program. We have owned Porsches for last 8 years and no complaints. Currently have a new Cayenne and 991.2 CPO 911. Dealer interactions are great. Routine maintenance sucks cost wise. That is the biggest drawback. You can't just go to jiffy lube for a $30 oil change (and wouldn't want to). The current generation Cayenne is a step up from the prior in comfort and road noise. |

GF has a Macan, it's fun. Amazingly, she hasn't hit anything/anyone or gotten a ticket. Get the GTS. Originally Posted By terryj: Have you had your testosterone checked lately? Lamborghini Urus man! Be better off buying the Audi RS Q8. Which is good looking, mean looking. |

Nothing from our friends in Nippon, like the GT-R? Lexus was already brought up. I've even heard that the Corolla GR is way more fun than a car like that should be (if you can find one). And all are way more reliable and cheaper to maintain. ETA: Non-poors thread. |

If its a personal vehicle you're going to keep years then be certain to have a shop you trust and you'll be fine as long as you accept that you'll need to do some repairs from time-to-time. I knew this going into it, kept it past warranty, and don't mind repair bills, but I ended up in a place where something broke every few weeks and once the PDK started to fail intermittently the hassle was no longer worth my time. |

| Just got the wife out of a Range Rover recently and into a little GLC AMG. She also drove a Macan and a Cayenne. The Macan is pretty basic inside. That's why she went Mercedes. I personally liked the Cayenne, but it wasn't my choice. But if I just had the 2 choices you have, I'd choose the Macan. Although we never had any issues in the 5 years she had the RR, I was always thinking that that first big repair was right around the corner. As soon as that extended warranty was 2 months from being up, she traded it in. A Porsche will be more reliable long term, probably. |

Just got a RR Sport. CPO, and when the warranty is over in my planned 3 years I'm swapping it. Multiple friends had Macan's and didn't love them. X5 I hit my head every time getting in and out. Q5/Q7 was serious consideration. Didn't look at Porsche, didn't like the Mercedes options as much. so for 3ish years I'm dipping my toe in the RR world, we'll see. And yes, I'm planning for expensive shit to fix. Drove like a dream. |

My wife wanted a Range Rover for the longest time and I kept saying no because of the reputation. Seems they are better now so we bought one. I also bought an extended warranty in case she goes over the mileage limit. I think there is around 20,000 miles on it now and haven't had a single problem....I know that isn't a long-term review. It's a nice, I like it. |

It's very luxurious, powerful, has a screaming set of brakes (get the M-sport package) and you can automate damn near everything if you want to. There's a short four lane passing zone on the way to CDA, and we were following several logging trucks yesterday. I glanced at the HUD and I was doing 90mph with zero drama, the vehicle pretty much insulates you from it. The big seller is the B58 engine. Worth doing a little DD on, it's considered one of, if not the best, engines in production today. Warranty is four years or 50,000 miles, which I'd barely touched in seven years of driving a 4Runner. I'll probably trade just prior to the four years, SUVs just don't hold much attraction for me. Not my photo, but this is exactly my vehicle. Attached File |

Getting out of our 2020 Range Rover as we speak. Reliability has been problematic. Finding someone to work on it if you are a little off the beaten track can be tricky. Repairs are expensive once out of warranty. And, if that's not enough, we are going to take a bath on resale value. Oh yeah, one of the last bonuses is that it is very high on the "please carjack me" list. We are looking at Sequoia and Lexus. BMW was also interesting, but we wanted something a bit larger. Good luck! |

I could be talked into double budget, but triple budget plus Lambo maintenance costs is just irresponsible. My business partner and I promised to live on just our salaries and save the big bucks for acquiring commercial property, so can't just plop out $180-250k. I have to have a car note. |

Not a car person? Mazda. Macan GTS owner of 10 years here. Custom ordered, Euro delivery, live by the Porsche dealer, long relationship with them, have lift/tools, etc. There's a lot to like: chassis tuning, suspension linkage, build quality, comparative light weight, braking, interior durability, controls, general purpose size/nature. There's also a lot that ends up feeling pretty mediocre: engine, this particular PDK variant, economy, ride quality, all the design compromises present in an upjumped hatchback. At 125,000 miles, our repair costs haven't been awful, but they haven't been great, either. Replacing an air strut costs $5k apiece and I really don't dig that. Verdict: great mainstay vehicle that I wouldn't do again. |

For a non car-guy who just wants a nice appliance to go around town, a Tesla would be just about perfect. Use the company truck for ICE things, and Tesla with full self driving for EV things like local travel gives you options. It is the best of both worlds. FWIW, Unlike many in this thread who are recommending what they drive, I don't own a Tesla. I am a car guy and I prefer driving a stick. |

I’ve had 4 Land Rover products over the last decade: 2 Discoveries, a Defender 130, and a RR Sport. None have given us any trouble, but we don’t keep cars very long. Land Rover used to be the most popular make in my practice, but now it is Tesla. My wife and I both also have Teslas now…never (hopefully) going back to an ICE vehicle. So much easier to use day to day. Actually enjoy driving my M3P more than my previous 911. |

It's going to run much closer to $150,000 if you option it well. Is any of that stuff important to you? The biggest downside to me would be a V-8 that's expensive to maintain and significantly more trouble prone than the B58. I have to admit if I lived in an environment free of ridiculous numbers of deer, turkey, elk, moose and bear, used hundred dollar bills to light my cigars and spent a lot of time playing one-up on the neighbors it would be tempting. |
