The huge camera sensor array technology fascinates me.  I wonder if an orbital spherical version could be made for 360x360 degree sky surveys?

Maybe have some placed around the solar system, at different points of the axis plane?

Just imagine what we could find zipping around.

I’ve seen its gas cloud was around half the diameter of the sun. My quick googling and math says that’s under half a million miles. Its closest approach to Mars is around 18.5 million miles.

COMET 3I/ATLAS HAS REACHED MARS: Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS is flying past Mars today--and the Mars Fleet is watching. "We're about to get our best-ever look at an interstellar comet," says physicist T. Marshall Eubanks from Space Initiatives Inc, who is helping coordinate international spacecraft teams as they train their instruments on 3I/ATLAS.

As many as 6 spacecraft could get a close-up view: NASA’s MAVEN and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, ESA's Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, the UAE's Hope probe, and China's Tianwen-1.

Because 3I/ATLAS is now practically invisible from Earth as it swings behind the sun (a blackout that will last until December) Martian spacecraft may provide the only high-quality spectra and images of the comet at its brightest. "The fleet at Mars could deliver the definitive dataset," write Eubanks and colleagues, who authored a new study urging space agencies to seize this opportunity.

When the comet passes Mars on Oct. 3rd, it will be almost bright enough to see with human eyes--about magnitude +6.7, according to Eubanks. If only humans were there to see it. Spacecraft will have to do all the work. The comet will be 0.195 AU (29 million km) from the Red Planet, giving the orbiting fleet a ringside seat.

Of all the cameras involved, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE will deliver the sharpest images: 29 km per pixel. HiRISE should resolve the comet's atmosphere (coma) with more than 850 pixels. Researchers will be on the edge of their seats to see if the camera can also glimpse the nucleus hidden within the gas cloud. Photographing the core could put to rest internet rumors that it is "alien tech."

For Eubanks, getting the maximum amount of data is a labor of love. "I have worked on this very intensively since July," he says. "As my wife would tell you, we have no funding source for this."

Mars is looking big in the window. Let the observing begin!

I wonder if the odd reactions from this object and it’s gasses are because they are made of the antimatter version of those elements?

You're not wrong. Matter-Antimatter reactions are 100% efficient. It's...kind of the point.

That said, an antimatter comet plowing through a matter solar system would create some interesting and "abnormal" results, until it was figured out. Oversized coma as it rammed into the solar wind, odd color, odd elements in said coma, etc.

OTOH, now we're getting into the profound problems in physics, such as why the entire Universe didn't annihilate itself in a 50/50 matter/antimatter reaction immediately after it came into being, and, well...a bunch of shit after that.

Welcome to day whatever of the .gov shutdown. NASA is a .gov agency, whose budget has been slashed to the bone, numerous programs cancelled, and who knows how many emplyees "furloughed."

Elections have consequences. Ask the people in Gaza who elected Hamas as their "government" about those.

Oh that’s right the government shutdown is happening and hitting NASA at a critical time.  What other agencies have Mars orbiters that can see this?

And, I saw that delta shaped sun photo. I don’t know if thats real or not.  My default assumption is that this is an interstellar “comet” of some kind. Strange as hell and perhaps we need a new word for these.

Nasa not releasing the photos or are they claiming they didn't take any?

I guess the most important question was answered - would it break up on far side of sun, and the answer to that is "nope" so what it is is strange yet.

Jet detection on interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS with the Two-meter Twin Telescope

We report a faint jet detected in deep g-band images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, also known as C/2025 N1 (ATLAS), obtained with the Two-meter Twin Telescope at Teide Observatory during the night of 2 August 2025 (UT). Between 21:18 and 00:16 UT, a total of 159 individual exposures of 50s each in the g band were acquired and co-added following the apparent motion of the object and centered on the comet optocenter. A Laplace-filtered image of the central coma of 3I/ATLAS, obtained following the method described by Serra-Ricart & Licandro (2015, ApJ, 814, 49), shows a faint jet at a position angle (PA) of 286.9+- 0.9 degrees (purple line), coincident with the broad, sunward-directed plume detected in visible images along PA = 280 +- 10 degrees (ATel #17350). The PA of the detected jet was measured at a projected distance of 6000 km from the comet optocenter (indicated by the red lines). The projected velocity vector of the comet (blue arrow) and the antisolar direction (yellow arrow) are also shown, together with the image orientation and a distance scale.

So it has an enormous and bright plume facing the sun and a little barely visible jet on the side facing away from the sun.  This thing just keeps getting weirder.

Angry Astronaut made a comment that IF, big if, this thing is artificial, it could be camouflaging itself.  If so, the camouflage is working very well since all we can really say is "it's probably a comet even though it's doing a bunch of shit we've never seen comets do, but still probably a comet, just a weird comet".

"Jets" are common on comets from various frozen chemicals turning to gas due to the sun's warmth.  What's NOT common, is a giant plume of gas facing toward the sun that is unaffected by solar wind.

Cometary tails are formed by venting gas/jets.

Regardless of jets and any other observations that may or may not match what comets typically do, I would imagine that enough propulsion acceleration to appreciably alter it's current interstellar velocity and vector would be immediately apparent to everyone watching.

If they've gotten the technology tgo get to here from wherever, they likely would have run out of fuel if using a reaction engine for maneuvering., unless it's just totally a random comet wondering past and the sun warmth caused a couple jets to open up in odd stpots.

I don't have a better answer or really a plausible theory.  If they have the tech to aim and get nice imaging shots from who knows how far away, but they don' have the other features lie antigrav to jump around or something?  Maybe our  tech level is the highest it can get and we're seeing an artifact from an age of people that died out long ago or a random chunk of stuff entirely naturally created and there's no boogie man.

It's not like we have a bunch to choose from.   I mean with the possibility of the Bible being from us to us, (possibly at the encouragement of a different species if wanting to keep it as a  unified theory.), that would make one well known interaction total.

In all of history (well, in the past 8000 years), we made notes to ourselves of what to do and what not to do and then thought we knew better than the stupid us so they did the same thing in a slightly different way in a slightly different  spot.  No matter what they do, history keeps repeating itself.  That's probably why we have all these pyramids around the world.  That's the adolescent teenage emo angst version of us trying the exact same thing over and over, just in a different spot.

Or these guys are the Pakistanis of the universe and they ghetto-rigged a chunk of rock with some thrusters and a life support system.

Rogan made a comment regarding 3iAtlas and I'm paraphrasing: "I want to meet the most advanced aliens that can teleport and shit, not a bunch of space Vikings who are riding on a big rock looking for somewhere to pillage."

It's a big ol' universe and assuming every civilization capable of space travel is going to be equally capable is, to quote a well-known Vulcan, illogical.

Speaking of pyramids, I watched a fascinating lecture by Robert Schoch's wife.  Her theory is that many of the sites in Egypt were intentionally buried, just like Gobekli Tepi.

She showed numerous photos of sites with tens of thousands of mud bricks all strewn around and the landscape certainly looks like someone excavated the area in antiquity.  She postulated that the ancient Egyptians dug up several megalithic sites that were purposely buried by a previous culture and repurposed them, instead of the mainstream version that says the Egyptians built the structures and the mud bricks are just later renovations.  She also said if that's the case, it could well be that the shitty mud brick pyramids were built just to cover an existing structure, which makes perfect sense given the tunnels and such that are underneath the piles of mud bricks and the megalithic interiors of some of the crappy pyramids.

According to accepted dating, there's a 7,000 year gap between the construction of Gobekli Tepi and the Step Pyramid of Djoser (surprise, it's a megalithic structure covered by smaller stones).  That's a massive shitload of time for a megalithic culture to spread out and build multiple other sites, even if one assumes Gobekli Tepi was their first build.

We desperately need a time machine to figure out why the megalithic cultures buried their shit after spending all the time and effort on construction.  Maybe they figured out a way to leave this planet and wanted to hide/protect their sites in case they returned, or they somehow knew shit was about to get bad and they had enough warning to bury their treasured structures.
Everything posted above is factual. Maybe.

all of these sites being buried are we being warned about something and we cant read enough to find out what is coming they watched the sky and perhaps saw something we are missing

Quick "back to reality" question, as I haven't been following it lately (52+hour work week):

Despite the "jets," has it slowed down or changed course in any significant manner? Or is it still on course to streak through our system at 130,000mph, in the same trajectory as it entered?

Definitely the big question - has it changed course and speed, and if so, can it be projected for a zero/zero intercept with any Solarian celestial body?
