I work with acoustics engineers and once I asked if we could develop a device that didnt suppress sound but rather constrained it to such a tight pattern that it would only make noise directly in front of it. We develop speakers and we try very hard to control the coverage patterns of our horns - so could we make a "horn" that screwed onto a firearm that focused the gunshot to basically a laser beam of sound. This was his response. "A gunshot is basically an explosion and in an explosion you have every frequency of sound being created simultaneously from a single point origin. This is similar to a bolt of lightning and the expanding gasses we call Thunder. Thunder contains every frequency and depending on your proximity to the strike what you hear is very different. If you are close to the strike then you hear a 'thunder-clap or crack' or a very high pitched and short lived crack. If you are far away you hear rolling thunder or rumbling that reverberates in your chest. This has to do with the length of the waves that you are experiencing the most. When close to the lightning strike you get flooded with short-wave, high-pitched pressure waves, while the much longer, low-pitched waves basically go right over you. When your far from the strike, the short waves have lost all of their energy and disappeared but the long waves now roll over you, so only hear the rolling thunder. For this reason you cant design a 'horn' that could contain the entire frequency range within the limits of human hearing." I thought that was a pretty fascinating explanation of sound (pressure) waves. I may have screwed up some terminology. |
| You could do it but it would require a closed action and an extremely long barrel before the suppressor to allow for some gas cooling. Think of something like a 40" barrel with an expansion chamber before the suppressor proper and as small of an exit hole as possible followed into a flaming pig type design. |
