Deputy with mullet charged after his three year old guns down people while turkey hunting (Page 1 of 2)

Good thing blaze orange isn't required for turkey... |

| Happens more than you think. Years ago I was “barked” by a new hunter. I was sitting behind a large tree and apparently part of my arm moved beyond the tree, my green, tan, brown camo was mistaken for game. Luckily the only thing that exploded was tree bark and not my arm. I was only exposed for a second so I don’t know why he even shot. |

I'm not a turkey hunter, so this is just what I've heard. I won't walk into public land without at least an orange hat. I don't care what season it is or what regs call for. Even archery deer I wear orange. People who don't become very difficult to see. Also I always have orange on the dog if I'm walking her anywhere near public hunting land. |

I've hunting Honey Creek once.. and that was rabbit hunting in blaze orange. Nope, never again to many morons. Another public hunting spot near by releases pheasant and I would coyote hunt it a few weeks later. More than once I was "stalked " while set up with a pheasant distress/ cackle call. |

The complaint states Lehman told investigators he "is not a very experienced turkey hunter" and that this was "one of his first times out hunting independently." He also said he "did not have a hunter safety certificate" because he was exempt due to previous military service. Renee Thok, Hunter Education Administrator for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, said Lehman's military background qualified him for that exemption. "He had completed a U.S. Armed Forces basic training. Reported that, obviously, to the DNR, and then you know we waive the hunter education certification that's necessary," Thok said. Wisconsin allows people to hunt without completing a hunter education course as long as they are within arm's reach of a mentor who has graduated from the education program or who is exempt and who holds a valid hunting license. Thok said the age of Lehman's daughter was not the central issue in this case. "I understand that people see the age and that probably sparks interest, but that doesn't really play into it as they were utilizing the hunter mentorship program," Thok said. Multifaceted WTF. Court documents state the child victim underwent surgeries but still has pellets stuck in his spinal cord, skull, and brain. |

I've never seen a police officer with a mullet. If I got pulled over by that I'd wonder if someone was impersonating a officer. |
Strive to carry the handgun you would want anywhere, everywhere; forget that good area bullcrap.

The 3 year old did not shoot the 12 gauge, the cop had his 3 year old pull the trigger. Around here you are supposed to wear an orange hat at a minimum. Who the hell is shooting turkeys at a range that you can't tell what you are shooting at? These people that shoot at movement should be shot. |

WTF I am all for giving servicemen some breaks and deals but the military teaching one to hit a target and operate a rifle and crew served weapons has not a god damned thing in common with a hunter safety class. This shooting is a perfect example of why. Give them a free hunting license but at least require the safety course, they’re F’n free of charge. <—- 25 year hunter ed instructor but now out of it. Lived by an army post and used to hear the constant whining from troops that they didn’t need the course because the army taught them to shoot, yea, we teach you when and why not to shoot. |

For one set of questions, in WI: Hunter safety course = CCW training course = military small arms training. The equivalency goes lots of ways. Kids that age are out hunting with their dads for Turkey. For the other set of questions: RACINE. It's the taint between Milwaukee and Shitcago where ghetto, redneck, and communism interbreeds and festers. |

If the bushes move, shoot first and blame your toddler later. |

I remember the first time my dad took me shooting. At ~6 years old, he had to get a forked stick stuck in the ground for me to rest the barrel of a 9mm pistol so I could hold it up. Could the 3 yo be resting the 12-gauge across a log or something and shoot it? Sure. Would the recoil drive that kid backwards heels over head? Yep. |

The odds of getting shot while in the Spring Turkey woods are really, really low. Don't succumb to the fear mongering tactics. I've been at it since '89 and have never had a problem or even a close call where someone was going to shoot me. Quite a while ago I was using a scoped 12GA. and was working a bird, when I hear a hen to my left. The gobbling bird was to my right. If it wasn't for the brush, both were within sight w/o me moving my head. So... my eyes are going back-n-forth as they're calling. Gobbler. Hen. Gobbler. Hen. etc. Next thing I see is a turkey fan partially, then mostly blocked by this big tree. A full fan and in the general direction of the hen and within 40yds. I moved my gun into position to cover that tree. A few minutes later it looks like a turkey is coming out from behind the tree and making its way toward the gobbler. Bring the scope to my eye and see a hunter w/ baseball cap, face mask, the whole bit. Lifted my head and confirmed w/ my naked eye. Yep. Hunter. I can't stand hunter orange and it isn't required in Missouri. I like it that way. |
"Some of the greatest dads I've ever seen weren't so much perfect as they were willing to work hard to overcome their failings. Does that make sense?"
Yes. Yes it does.

I have been buying my son (now 6) bear license for zone B since he was born, might actually get to hunt it when he is 11 or 12 though. |

"I can't stand hunter orange" "Hunter Orange" is better than the old Red but still sucks as a "safety color", even for marker cones, etc. Reason being that about 8% of the male population is "color challenged" to some degree, primary shades of red and green. Shades of red, including orange, do not have enought contrast to be readily visible and appear to blend into foliage background. Even red dot sights suck for those of us with color impairment. Current "LIme Green" actually works for everybody. |

It looked rough the last time I drove in for kringle. If you'd have told me 20 years ago that Racine would slide behind Kenosha on any sort of "desirability" index, I'd have laughed in your face. But Kenosha has really cleaned up and Racine looks abandoned. |
