Update 9/14 We have some self-reflection and critique today in several classes, so progress will slow a bit today. Kids hate it, but making them do some self-reflection on their work and assigning a grade to their own work is a pretty fantastic tool for learning. It allows them to enjoy and recognize their successes, and also where they could have done a bit better. It also allows them to recognize the problem solving sequence and what they would do different if they had to work the same problem again. Mermaid- Hailee started adding the first layer of skin to our mermaid's torso.  This young lady doesn't have my class this semester, but dropped in on Friday to work, as she missed working on the projects.   Charlotte continuing with the skin- I like how organic and almost seaweedish the skin looks. Charlotte decided we would cover the breasts with dangling seaweed. It will solve the problem of "modesty" that some might complain about if we left them uncovered. I like the idea, as it will not look "little mermaidish" with clamshells or something similar.  We got the arms screwed in place late friday, but need to check the position before we cover with skin. We will do that today.  Big Horn Sheep- Landon P worked to add more detail to the face. I think we may have to stop for a bit as we need more smaller pieces of drift wood for better options. We will see if anyone brought in more driftwood for makeup today.   |

The value of early lessons in accountability as a development tool cannot be overstated. |

Update 9/15 F-4U Cross section of our fuselage. I think we need to revisit the rest of the cross sections before we draw out more, as I think we may have added contours that are not there. We will look at the model this morning, and go from there.  Pirate Cove- Burlap and glue continues  Earhart's place- Sawyer W working on more wire sculpture of the rock  Hayden J- Working on Earhart's Electra scaling. Wing span will be about 60".  Tiger Shark- The snout getting filled out a bit. Later in the day, Kamryn and team applied spray foam to the edges to round out the stepping a bit.  Mermaid's tail- We think the wire secured to the plastic mounting plate will allow us to shape the tail to our desired contours, then space the foam cross sections where needed. We will add expanding foam between the layers, where they gap. This is easier than slicing the layers to thinner on the inner edges of the contours.  Dayton applying foam-  Charlotte adding foam, while Dayton holds things in place.  Our mermaid getting skin on the arms, after they were repositioned.  Ashlyn adding skin to the arms, working her way to the hand.  Big Horn- Landon P worked on the torso a bit, as we are still waiting for more selection of wood for the face.  |

You really have streamlined this to minimize the sucky stuff you need to do while maximizing the fun building projects stuff you get to do while at 'work'. |

F4U Corsairs of WW II era had retractable gear and if they ditched, it was with gear up. When crashing, it was also likely gear up since it was a hand crank down/up to get more speed, hence the giant prop and bent wings to allow it to turn. So a ditched or crashed F4U from WWII would have 98% had landing gear up/retracted since making it a waterboard made ditching safer. |

Update 9/16 I didn't get many pictures yesterday, but we still seemed to get quite a bit done. First off, lets recognize @UncleEric Sir, you have been an exceedingly generous contributor for so many years. THANK YOU!!!!!!   Mermaid- Carter, Reece, and Kennly all working to get close to being finished with the burlap on our column.  Later, we got the mermaid's head screwed on tight, and in position. We need to replace the screw with something a bit longer to hang her on, but this gives us an idea of how she will be positioned.  Addie and Layla worked to try out a way of getting our mermaid's hair to look like it's floating. We will see if it works or not.  |

When used for foam and wood and glue, they'll last forever and get down at high speed, hold a shop vack near by and it'll vanish and prevent you from going too far. If trying to smooth PVC, they'll dull a bit and with metal, they'll take finish off but need replacements. They're basically double sided hacksaw blades welded together, so one side is coarse the there medium (or one medium other fine). They're awesome for rapid material removal along contours. |

Update 9/17 Pirate Cove- Tayson, Ryan, and Marco working to get the entire reef and rocks covered with burlap. We ran out of glue late yesterday and are waiting on a new delivery. We will begin getting more references together for the ship.  F-4 resting place- We got the final support beam on the bottom, as well as starting the decorative underside of the shelf.  F-4 Morgan, David, and KC worked to get calculations and and contour frames laid out for our fuselage.  Matt worked to cut out the 1st couple cross section frames for our fuselage.  Deep Sea Diver- James and Chase got layers of burlap on the ocean floor of our base yesterday.  Mural Team My team leaders aren't thrilled with their work on the ocean yet. They like the more mild stroke texture, and not so much of the more harsh lines. They talked about what they would do to change it, and left notes in the book for the other groups.  Mermaid- Charlotte took on creating the tail shape yesterday. We had a couple different shapes until we found one that would fit the lexan we had left over from the broken SpaceX Super Heavy launch.   Charlotte, Dayton, and Emma working to get it cut out, late yesterday.  I'm loving how the skin is turning out on our mermaid. We will have to clean up some features a little later, when it dries. Naomi and Ashtyn worked to fix some of the contours under the neck, and armpit areas. They also worked on the facial features, and ears.   Emma and Dayton worked to shape and trim off excess foam on our tail.  Tiger Shark- Our nose section got glued onto the 1st section of our head yesterday. We ran out of foam board and had to wait till the end of the day for more to show up.  Big Horn sheep- Landon continued to fit pieces around the face and back of the neck yesterday.  |

The best shape is always the one that uses an existing leftover piece of lexan. Back when I was a robotics mentor, I would tell the kids, "Before cutting up a $30 piece of aluminum into a bunch of $1 pieces, please look in the scrap bin to see if there is a piece that will work." We had a lot of scrap. |

Update 9/18 Frantic Friday Edition- Our new 5gal of glue showed up late yesterday, so we should be good to go today again. Mermaid- Dayton and Charlotte got the tail cut out yesterday. We will work to attach it to the rest of the tail today. We've got some ideas about how to do this so it is pretty secure. We will see if they work.  We began working on designs for the mermaid's various fins. Kamryn and Zoe drew out some ear fins that look pretty good.   Yup, it's going to be a bit odd looking, but we began adding a base coat of paint to the mermaid's torso. Charlotte and Ashlyn put the first coats on. We want to add this first before adding other darker colors, and then iridescent colors later.  Mermaid's column- With glue in short supply and non-existent later in the day, Carter and Reece worked to add the first few drops of spray foam to the texture of the column.   Later in the day, the girls wanted to check to see if back fins would work with how she was going to be placed near the column. They won't.  Team Shark- Ellora and Maysyn shaped the nose of our shark a bit yesterday.  Mural Team- Reagan, Trey, and Taylor added more paint after we were able to move the U-boat out of the way, just a bit with the ladder. My team leaders did some rework to their own brush strokes later in the day to make them a bit less bold. They found a pattern they were happy with, and worked to get much fixed. We will add airbrush work over the top a little further down the road.

Update 9/21 Mermaid's Column- Reece tried his hand at making more linear coral type growth with the foam and some wire.  We may work on adding a bit more material today.  Mermaid- Dayton and Charlotte worked on getting the tail attached on Friday. The wire is too weak to hold it up, so we will have to insert a dowel into the foam for support.  Charlotte and Ashlyn started playing with some other colors on our mermaid. We need to work on the transitions.  Deep Sea Diver platform- James and Chase got the platform covered. They will work on cleaning up the edges, and then we will work on some sand.  Mural work- We continue to add and adjust the stroke textures.

Update 9/22 BIG THANK YOU TO @xanadu and @Everetts !!!!! Fellas, the packages came in yesterday! Fantastic!!!! Everetts- The picks and pliers/cutters will be great! The kids specifically talked about how nice the picks would be for a host of different things. We don't have anything like that.  xanadu- The glue guns came at the right time. We just had two more die last Friday. These looks very, very nice. Way better than the ones we had. THANK YOU!  Mermaid- Layla and Addie got more coats of paint on the soon to be hair of our mermaid.  Hailey and Cambree took on adding some definition to the mermaid.  Addie also jumped in and showed her talent with a brush. The kids worked to refine down the color pallet and values. Looking more like what we were imagining. The log books really are helping different groups communicate.  Coral- Aubrey worked to trim down slices of foam to make coral shelves to attach to our column.  |
