Victor at VAS Aviation channel posted this video/audio of the event in real time. Looks like Gryder was ferrying a plane that started to get fuel fluctuations followed by a fuel smell which caused him to shut off the engine. I posted the details of my catastrophic engine failure on takeoff at 200ft here years ago. The number of high time pilots that have dead-sticked light airplanes is pretty impressive. Years ago, I was caught up on reading all of the NTSB fatal accident reports for piston singles and then I switched to reading the NASA reports for those that did not end in an NTSB investigation. My operational rule became: avoid doing what people did to end up in the NTSB database and remember what people said they did in their NASA reports. My incident ended in a field, and I clearly remember, while the plane was struggling to maintain weight on wheels with the high speed that I had, and as the fence and trees were approaching, considering digging a wing in to cartwheel the airplane because I remembered one Mooney accident where the pilot was approaching a berm and did exactly this to save all four souls on board. |
