Pretty interesting discussion around Halsey's raids in WW2 in the South China Sea US Navy Carrier Raids in the South China Sea-Episode 411 This week Seth and Bill take a look at Admiral William F. Halsey's carrier raids into the South China Sea in January 1945. As early as October 1944, Halsey realized that the South China Sea was an untapped hunting ground for Japanese shipping. These vital supply lines brought most of Japan's oil, foodstuffs, and raw materials to or from the Home Islands. Only recently penetrated by American submarines, the South China Sea was seen as open ground by Halsey. In January 1945, Bill Halsey took his 3rd Fleet into the sea and wreaked havoc across the area over a week. The destruction wrought by Task Force 38 was, at that time, unprecedented in terms of Japanese shipping sunk in a week's time. With the Japanese oil supply already at a critical level, Halsey and his carrier aviators put even more pressure on the Empire in this little-known, but vastly important, series of aircraft carrier raids. |

Yet, I can still tell what the narratives and topics being pushed are by browsing GD. If something is strongly recommended, I wait for it to come onto Amazon Prime or YouTube for free. Only entertainment content I pay for is audible.com audiobooks which I only get ones cheaper than $10/hour, so 20-40 hour "epic" books, usually sci-fi/sci-fi fantasy/ and lately LitRPG has become a big trend - characters die or have an incident which puts them in an afterlife as a guy in a World of Warcraft sort of environment where everybody has character sheet and seems like reality otherwise but the usual D&D monsters and issues show up. Some of them are pretty good in the Audible+ free libraries. "To Sleep in a Sea of Stars" is hands down the best sci-fi book in the Plus (free w/Membership) area, at 36 hours, it's an epic space sci-fi which has a huge breadth and ties it all up neatly without sequels. Too many start the LitRPG then try selling the rest of the stories at 8 hour chunks for 1 credit (~$12) and so I bail as no matter how entertaining it is, it aint worth over $10/hr. |
