So this popped up on my Reddit feed last night whilst drunk surfing.  Sober Dave has reviewed it and it still looks pretty interesting.  For the non clickers, it appears to show a pipe or something artificial sticking out of the ground on Mars.  Anyone else seen this or know the story?

I’m not a geologist or even an amateur rock hound. But I don’t know of any mineral or rock that would form into a cylinder naturally. At least here on Earth.

Over the years I’ve seen photos of Mars that have purported to be shapes that couldn’t be natural. Such as the face on Mars. I’ve always looked at those pictures with skepticism.

But this? Wow! And according to the date below the photo, this was taken 3 years ago. Did they “drive” the rover closer for a better picture? Or was it missed when analyzing?

Yeah that's kinda where I'm at, but this seems to look like a manufactured item.  It also fits into my "NASA didn't notice it but if it gets popular and they can't explain it, they'll remove it" theory.  We'll see.

Unfortunately the pictures taken just before and after don't appear to have captured the same area. You really need a second or third angle to figure out whats going on.

The area is sort of an ancient riverbed, so it could be something that was formed by water but it seems a bit too perfect, at least from this angle.

The rover can only move a few hundred feet per day, so there is probably another image of that object out there.

The whole rock cliff is fractured, so it's probably just a natural rock fracture with shadows and pareidolia doing the rest, but boy does it look like a passageway going into the cliff.

There's a few straight and flat faces in that image but can't think of anything to write off the "doorway" at top center in that photo (the one posted few posts above)

That cylindrical something is also a head scratcher, I'd really lie to bbe able to somehow send a mission to grab a few of these things seen and bring them back, unmanned of course, but that would be super expensive.  Hopefully Musk gets it done.

There is supposed to be a future mission that picks up the core samples they drilled.   One of the  rovers leaves  the samples behind near where it drilled them.

MILTOID, I'm a geologist and have been looking at this image for the past hour. I can tell you with absolute certainty that geological formations (at least the ones we know of) do not have cylindrical features as crisp as this. Not even fossils. The object is even oriented perpendicular or oblique to the erosional surface, obviously unlike the surrounding rock layers. The Curiosity Rover is all alone there, the only instrument for hundreds of miles. Preserverance is over 2000 miles away. This is not a drill core sample left behind by human rovers. It could be trash, but what are the odds the rover just happened across it? And it is in this peculiar orientation? If it were freely moving trash, would it not tend to roll into alignment with the hillside? To me it appears like a pipe protruding from the hillside, like a water pipe or ventilation. Unfortunately, the shadow obscures the view of the end of the object, and it appears solid (unlike a hollow pipe). I would bet everything this is unnatural. Also, assuming the rock layers are ~1cm thick, this object appears to be several centimeters wide at its end.

For those thinking this material is from the Sky Crane lander crash debris: It is undeniably not Sky Crane crash debris. The Sky Crane crashed approximately 650m to the WNW of the rover, and debris was scattered further to the WNW. The rover did not and would not have wasted precious time to visit the crash site which was contaminated from hydrazine fuel. The rover traveled towards the East and then Southeast (Edit: Southwest, not Southeast) over the following months and would have never encountered the crash site. It is highly unlikely a single cylindrical piece of debris was blown all the way back to the path of the rover and then caught on camera. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/photo/martian-crime-scene-photo-shows-rover-its-trash-flna929075

you should be more concerned with the tictac with a shadow. ive seen the RAW image from the NASA website.  Its definitely there, with a shadow.    We have seen the 40ft version off the coast of california (fravor).  So, we should presume the one on mars is ISR and scaled down.

I cannot find where the mars tic tac is but I found something about 3/4 to 7/8 to the right, mostly to the right then maybe 1/4 down, it's in the middle of the dirt but a light rock with a dark grey thing appearing to float over that pale rock with one point touching and the shadow spreading out below.   So "upper right part of image" is where I see something dark grey maybe floating over a standard mars tan small flat stone which is in an island of the darker Mars dirt.

Nearly dead center in this photo which is a crop from the large tile which for some reason it's not letting me zoom in on.
