I need to upgrade an office computer so our practice management program can run the newest version of our EMR software. This workstation will only be used for patient notes and email. I’m looking for a low-cost desktop—either an all-in-one or a tower. Patient notes are stored on our server, but the computer does need Wi-Fi. Can you point me in the right direction? I’d prefer something tried-and-true, because I know a lot of “budget” PCs can be pretty rough. Thanks! |
| Find your local enterprise/commercial computer refurbisher. I do work for orgs that "recycle" Enterprise level PCs all the time and these machines feel about as fast as anything you would pick up new. To an average user, high end PCs haven't gotten any faster in the past 10 years. PCs in question have eight core i7 CPUs, 500 GB SSDs and 16-32 GB of RAM. Wipe/re-image and you'd swear you were on new hardware. You should be able to pick one up for $250-350. |

That will be MORE than plenty for ANY AAA game and will do hard-core video editing and rendering. 32gb of DDR4 3200 is plenty. Something in the ballpark of an Intel Core i7-14700K will take carry you for at LEAST four more years of high performance. Storage.... well... other than saying use a decent size M.2 NVMe drive for the OS and good ol cheap ultra large physical platters for storage, not much to recommend. |
