Clear coating. Rustoleum. An odd reaction… I’ve been spraying heavy coats of rustoleum gloss clear on dried latex house paint for decades. For some reason, tonight is bubbled and buckled the underlying paint - but only the paint from a quart of light grey. Same paint brand and finish as the others (Behr, eggshell) - just the grey. I assume something is off about the pigment. Maybe they used oil-pigment by accident? Dunno |

I really like it, as does my wife who's also an artist. This isn't a medium she's tried yet, but has been thinking about it lately. Your piece turned out great, you should be proud of yourself, hopefully it also calms your mind while you're working on a piece, we all need time to only focus on something that takes our full attention. Mine is automotive racing, but whatever it is, it's a nice break from reality. |

Dunno If you put it on thicker, the Toulene sits longer (that stuff is horrid for liver and is absorbed straight through skin from air into bloodstream). That on top of anything that isn't an enamel will have very mixed results depending on the composition of the latex paint and any improvements in the clear coat. I've found Krylon to be the most gentle but it has destroyed some small projects where I need to wipe it all off with MEK - Methyl Ethyl Ketone (Really, REALLY bad for liver, absorbs through skin, melts latex and nitrile gloves) and any paint that hasn't cured for a month will wipe off, just do it outside with the good non-disposable gloves from auto body supply store) It's an awesome solvent, though, just wear goggles and a face shield and only use in ventilated paint booth or outside with a slight breeze. Another thing you can do on your other projects is to use Krylon "Workable Fixative" on your paintings, it's designed for protecting pencil/pastel/graphite drawings so you don't smudge everything and can still be erased with an eraser, but a sweaty palm doesn't move it. Mist in very light coats and let dry for 4 hours, it's super fast drying. Then apply the clear coat the same way, very light dusting coats for the first few, "light" like leaving some areas not covered with the fan moving past. let them dry completely and then put on a medium coat and after 5 minutes another one and it should dry glossy. If you want matte, just keep applying the very light coats so the paint falls like little "balls" of clear that sit on the surface and don't provide a glossy reflection. TL;DR - Putting enamel clear on top of water based latex will be random especially if the latex isn't fully cured (a week in the sun would be about right to make it safe. I'd try Krylon instead of Rustoleum, the premium Rustoleum has chemicals which guarantee it will stick on most any non- wet/oil surface and stay there for a long time once dried. Preparation is key, which requires patience so both of those are important and not all clears are the same. For future reference, you should grab the latex you have the most left over on and paint chunks of cardboard with it. Then get the 4 big brands (Krylon, Rustoleum, House brand, premium 1k (not 2k activated urethane) from auto body shop) and after the latex on the cardboard has dried a couple days, lay the clear on somewhat heavy with each clear (remember to turn upside down to clean nozzle when spraying.....) Then, keep track of which ones shriveled up like paint stripper was put on it or bubbles or it just never dries and is a goopy mess. . Some of these clears are like just a couple minor ingredients and higher levels so stuff already in them to be the same as paint stripper. --ETA: Another thing you can try is the "0% V.O.C." paints, they suck, but they're water based and

I waited for it to settle, then gave it more clear coat. Thick. It’s captured underneath. My suspicion, is that whoever mixed the underlying latex paint in the store, accidentally used oil-based pigment for that particular quart. That reaction would make sense. I can think of no other reason for the reaction with only that color. Either way, the added texture looks great!

That paint stripper crinkling only being major on the tree trunk and not the background is just crazy since it really did improve it by making it look very close to the white birch bark on a tree chunk. That might not always be the case so I'll use my mistakes to give you a hint: remember to make a test cardboard chunk with the paints you're using to hit with clear as test cards prior to adding a new chemical mix on top of the one you have hours into making look pretty.  This turned out awesome, and you have the Bob Ross "Happy little Mistake" going on.
