I have 2 sides of my house are cedar t&g 6" boards running horizontal. It is over due for stain, however going a different direction and going painted. House is currently has old transparent stain. When it was done it had the typical orangeish red cedar color. It is well weathered at this point. You see spots where the stain is basically gone. Planning to wash with low pressure, but not sure what cleaner to use. Will any of the cleaners cause a problem with painting the cedar? As for paint, will a all in one paint with primer type work since there will still be some remaining sections with the old stain? Or would it be better to prime then paint? When time comes for the paint process it will be applied via airless sprayer. One wall will be done from a lift due to height, from ground to gabel end peak about 30ft. |
| Solid stain. Not paint for cedar. Works better. Won’t blister from moisture. They look exactly like paint. I have used the Sherwin Williams solid stain for 20 plus years. For a cleaner you could go to an actual SW store or another big paint brand store and see what they sell to the pros for cleaning it. I have used a run of the mill siding cleaner from Lowe’s / Home Depot and the 30 second cleaner both with good results but not on stained cedar. |

Will have to see if they can tint to the color we want for the stain (solid). Windows arrived late yesterday. Did the swab with alcohol test, appears to be water based staining the house currently. If using a solid stain, is there a particular prep (base coat, primer) needed? |
