Yesterday was a first for me at Mass. I walked out of the church angry. I usually go to a TLM about 30 min down the road. I wanted to save on gas so I said I’ll go to the NO church right down the street and go to mass there. I walk into the church and it sounded like people were having a Sunday brunch. People were gabbing and carrying on. I sat in the corner away from everyone near where the choir sits and they too were having conversations about something. You were unable to sit in silence to pray or just meditate a little. Absolutely no reverence shown. Anyway mass starts and is going well. I notice a few people including church staff in the Seahawks jersey of their favorite player, nice! We get to the priests homily and he starts off ok but it quickly degenerates on how people have said and I quote “God hates fags” (he also used N word with the hard r last year) but that’s not the case because God loves us all despite our sins(kind of heretical I thought) then it went further downhill when he said we should allow the illegals in so we can level the playing field, there are illegals here that have been here for 20+years and if we don’t the agriculture and hospitality industry is going to collapse. He went on for a couple more minutes of promoting lawlessness then the real fun began. The priest consecrates the Eucharist and all the Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers show up behind the alter and do their dab of hand sanitizer. It’s then that I notice one of them is wearing a Seahawks Championship sweatshirt. This guy is giving out the body, blood, soul and divinity of our lord and saviour and this is what he is wearing? Communion starts and the priest sits down in his chair and lets the EEM’s distribute communion. I don’t receive communion from anyone but a priest so I go with out. As communion is wrapping up and the chalices and ciborium are supposed to be purified the priest is still sitting in his chair allowing the EEM’s and alter servers to do the clean up. (At 53:55 is when you can see this)I then watch as an EEM goes up to the alter takes a ciborium full of unconsumed consecrated Eucharist, grabs a handful of Eucharist with his hand and places them in the ciborium that goes to the tabernacle. He fisnishes cleaning out the old ciborium and saunters over to the tabernacle and places the now full ciborium in it. Mass wraps up and after the final song the whole congregation claps as usual. I leave and am in a foul mood for a few hours. Am I being too sensitive and are people not taking this stuff seriously? I wrote the head priest so we shall see. I’ll see if I can link the webcast of the mass so you can see for yourself. Mass Webcast |

What parish do you belong to? Do you think the Bishop is aware of this stuff? As for refusing the Eucharist... something tells me there may be more than one orientation issue here. |

And it often seems they don't belong to a Parish and have a pastor, they've made themselves their pastor. Just not sure if that applies here. |

And maybe I know what it’s like going to a church where reverence is the norm, it’s not treated like Sunday afternoon at the golf club and people don’t look like they just walked out of a sports bar. Call me old fashioned. It was never like this growing up at my NO church back in the 80’s. Times change I guess. |

No, you are not being too sensitive. It is reason number 87 why I am no longer catholic. It started decades ago when during the most reverent part of the mass, people would be up and walking around taking pics and movies. It is either reverent or not, if it is then everybody should be reverent, not allowing some people to make a documentary and take pics and movies while walking around the alter during the consecration. |

And like I said I emailed him with my concerns. You didn't make it clear that was your pastor. That's all I was asking. If he's lackadaisical about this stuff, you should probably elevate this to your bishop. Sadly I've heard some wild stories about some Bishops and what they accept or even promote. Archdiocese of Chicago is infamously crazy, but it often seems like they are pandering to an aging boomer demographic. P |

| Last year I went to a Vigil Mass a few miles away from that parish and declined to receive the Eucharist. Some similar and some different issues. I did not want to be part of the disrespect. I felt awful just being there and witnessing what was going on. The next day I attended a Sunday Mass elsewhere and received from a Priest on my knees. He smiled at me I think because I (was the only one I know of who) dropped to kneel. |

No it hasn’t reverted its that im just not accepting the body, blood, soul and divinity of our lord from unconsecrated hands ie the laity except in extreme circumstances. The CC has started using these extraordinary Eucharistic ministers as everyday helpers. They are meant to take the Eucharist to people who are bed ridden or in the hospital and the priest is unable to do so. Bill and Betty aren’t meant to give communion during the mass just because it will take 15 min longer but unfortunately that us what it has turned into across the country. |

[157.] If there is usually present a sufficient number of sacred ministers for the distribution of Holy Communion, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion may not be appointed. Indeed, in such circumstances, those who may have already been appointed to this ministry should not exercise it. The practice of those Priests is reprobated who, even though present at the celebration, abstain from distributing Communion and hand this function over to laypersons. [258] [158.] Indeed, the extraordinary minister of Holy Communion may administer Communion only when the Priest and Deacon are lacking, when the Priest is prevented by weakness or advanced age or some other genuine reason, or when the number of faithful coming to Communion is so great that the very celebration of Mass would be unduly prolonged. [259] This, however, is to be understood in such a way that a brief prolongation, considering the circumstances and culture of the place, is not at all a sufficient reason. https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/ccdds/documents/rc_con_ccdds_doc_20040423_redemptionis-sacramentum_en.html |

OP you are not wrong. I’m a Cradle Catholic and that stuff would never fly in my parish. I can promise that the pitchforks and torches would come out in my small town if this were the case. I understand folks that may attend mass before or after work and that type of attire. However, to wear a Jersey as a EM is out of line in my opinion. You are quite literally holding Christ in your hands and some reverence should be shown. I would not attend that parish and the Bishop should be made aware of what is happening. Admittedly, I’ve always been intrigued by the TLM and I’d really like to attend one in the near future. |
