I have carpenter ants, not termites, in one specific area of the house. We have used a commercial bug spray and it does kill them as they come out but need a good bait they can carry back or any other suggestions. I've had a termite inspection and I don't have termites, but their solution is to treat for termites. I need something that gets to the nest. |

Advion. It's a gel and comes in syringes. I've used it and it works. They take it back to the nest. Also Taurus SC or Termidor. Mix it up and hose down a strip about 3-4 feet from your foundation and up it. They are non repellent so they dont kill on contact, the ants walk through it and carry it back to the nest to infect the others. Edit to add a little more info about the spray ones. |

I just went through a major carpenter ant eradication. As others have pointed out, bait is absolutely the way to go. And do not use any sort of poison or repellent near the bait, you want them to come and get it. However, the real trick when it come to carpenter ants is that you need to supply both a sweet bait and a protein bait at the same time. They are hungry for different foods at different times depending on the state of the nest. I've done this dance before and if you only put out one type of bait they may or may not immediately go for it. My major infestation was in a single bay of the wall of my garage. I could easily hear them through the wall. I wound up removing part of the wall (it was unfinished anyway) and there was a solid block of them in the spray foam insulation, full thickness, about 1 x 2 ft in extent. I poked at the foam and it fell apart like nothing. It was a horror show of ants and larva pouring out  I was able to suck up the vast majority with a shop vac, but then I went to the double-bait approach to get the rest of them. Using the following two products in conjunction they were wiped out in no more than 48 hours.Sweet bait link Protein bait link The bastards that got sucked up by the vac died when I sprayed the vac container with regular insecticide  Once you get rid of them, prevent all the bugs from coming back by spraying a line of death  all the way round your house foundation with one of those gallon insecticide containers with the electric spray handles.
