I have been inundated with cats this year. Two litters from one mother and of course being the lean, mean, killing machine that I am I have adopted all of them. I can't just let the little buggers starve or freeze to death. So, next week the first kitten is due to be spayed. Being outside cats, and having a 7-year old indoor cat, I can't really bring her in after her surgery. He doesn't play well with others. The vet will keep her overnight, That will give her about 24-hours of managed care. Will that be enough? I'd hate to inflict additional hardship on the critter in this cold weather. I MIGHT be able to put her in the spare bathroom but I still worry about my indoor cat. Both for him and her. They all have a small storage building loaded with food, water, and places to sleep. A fresh bale of hay is in there too. And a litter box. I feed them all twice a day. After she is spayed next will be her sister and then the original kitten making machine. Lord , she's a slut cat. Any input or suggestions will be read and appreciated. |

| No advice, but good on you for caring for the cats. Sounds like they are more "outdoor" cats than feral. My girl tried to help a feral kitten once and it attacked the hell out of her, her hand swelled up from infection and had to see DR then the DR told the county and they came by the house to ask about said kitten. Not a good time, would not recommend. |

OP, if you're a "rural-y " kind of person, you may wish to consider spay-and-release. This puts the animals back in the environment so that new cats don't just come in and take over. There may be some vets who'll give you a discount on spaying or even freebies. |

Yeah, they are probably better termed 'outdoor' cats as they let me pick them up for a few seconds and don't usually leave permanent scars. I had the first one spayed two days ago and she is doing well. She is inside in a spare bathroom. The vet says two-weeks inside and she has to wear the cone of shame for two weeks also. I sure wish my indoor cat was more sociable. He makes loots of unhappy hissing sounds when he sees her through the door if I crack it open. I'd sort of like to make her an indoor cat but I don't know. Man it's not an inexpensive procedure either. A strain on finances but I sold three old guitars to help offset the cost. Buy some large pet cages That way they can relax and heal over days I have 2 6x6x6ft cages just for new ones in thr city Plce a carrier and litter box and dual food bowl.and water Let them heal Ever seen a catsbstiches come undone after being let loose prematurely 😔 |

What I have done with feral cats is to keep them in a large dog kennel with plenty of food and water and a small litter box. I have spayed/neutered quite a few feral cats over the years and always keep them in a large dog kennel until they are healed up enough to release. Some I have tamed down and found homes for and others I have released after they are healed. Now if I catch a litter of young feral kittens, then I will keep them in the dog kennel until I can get them tamed enough to get adopted. That usually takes about 3-4 weeks to get them tame. |
